How about a section for novices asking all the obvious questions? The usual suspects, door contacts and sleeper circuits, tach extra ign starter wires , not using search tab and that perennial favourite remote starts on late Mercedes etc with smart keyfobs

I'm not sure I completely follow you Howie.  Can you be more specific about your idea for this new section? Are you suggesting a new forum for novices or something like a section on how to use this site or the forums, or something else?

Remember when I asked about a dialog box that would pop up and ask if they remembered to post their equipment makes and models and their vehicle make and model?    I think Howie needs one to pop up and ask, Did you at least try the search function to see if your question has been asked and answered 100 times already.

Pop ups are not an option. A dialog box already exists above the new topic form and can easily be edited to include more text, but sadly we have many members that continue to ignore what's already there. An FAQ image/button can be added with a link to a page or topic with frequently asked questions that includes instructions on how to use the forum search and information that should always be included in their topics. If you guys want to add to this topic with FAQ's that should be included, please do so. After we have enough to fill a page, I'll begin creating an application to display them.

I was talking about the box that already pops up and says "Your message has been submitted, please do not resubmit.  I was talking about adding something there when they create the topic.  Maybe if they read it there they will notice it and say hey I didn't.  Then maybe they would post a second message with the info.   It would be too late to help Howie because it will have been posted already.

Well why didn't you say so the first time ;) Consider that done.

BTW, here is the new message so you don't have to create a new topic to see it.

"Your topic has been submitted, Please do not resubmit! If you have not entered the year, make, and model of your vehicle or your equipment, please post a reply to your topic with that info after this page reloads."

THANKS   I was wondering why you were so reluctant to do it.    I guess I just didn't explain it right the first time.

Initially they should place a check in the "Email Notify Me of Replies" checkbox when they create a topic or when they post a reply if they haven't already done so. The problem with some of our members is that they just don't read what's in front of them, so no matter how clear or simple we attempt to make it, many of the problems we have with some members will still exist, but I still think your FAQ idea is a good one and will help those that will read it, so keep the FAQ suggestions coming and I'll build it.

I thought it was "If you build it they will come".  You have turned it around on us.

Howie, yours is the first entry in the database for the new FAQ section. I'll list all of the categories and questions in alphabetical order. The questions will be links to the respective answer. In many of the FAQ answers I'll include images/screen shots and any other page elements as needed. So for anyone else that wishes to add to this list, please post your FAQ's in the following manner.

Question?  Answer.

Example:

How do I find my forum topics and posts? Click here to view all of your forum topics and posts or use the forum search to the find your topics and posts by entering your user name into the 'Search For' field, then select Author in the 'Search In' field. You may also select a forum to narrow your search before clicking the 'Start Search' button.

If you have a user name with special characters in it, you may not find any results using the method described above, so we strongly suggest that you enable email replies to your posts when you create a new topic. You may also set this as your default selection in your forum profle.

If you have hundreds or even thousands of posts, try searching for topics by the exact topic, keywords, and/or phrases.
