i have a buddy that wants to install an aftermarket deck into his equinox.I am just curious as to whether or not there is anything special i need to do this install for him.Is there a special harness or module that needs to be installed to keep the security system (or anything else) happy?Would I be able to get away with just taking out the factory radio and installing the new deck?Any info would be greatly appreciated

You need a kit of some kind. The factory radio is a Class II data unit. The correct kit will depend on your vehicle options, such as premium Pioneer system or non-amplified and whether it has Onstar. The correct kit will simplify wiring, give you a switched ignition feed derived from the data bus and keep your chimes intact (required in some areas for a vehicle safety). You need a mounting kit and an antenna lead adaptor as well.
