Ok I just bought an Autometer Cobalt Amplifier Ammeter gauge last month. I had been wanting this for like two years to top off my system. But at the retail price of $200 or more it has held me back. I ended up getting it from a clearing house in Alanta, GA that was selling closeout stock from speedway motorsports in Lincoln, NE. For about $25!! It is rated to 250 amps with blue digital display. My H.O. Alt is 170 amp. Now on their website at autometer.com they say it is not intended for the traditional ammeter application! However Once getting this gauge the instructions have no mention of it. My question is can I use this in the trunk infront of my rear trunk mount battery that is a hawker oddyssey pcmjt1700 and after my engine bay battery that is hawker oddyssey pcmjtL1200 and the stinger 200 amp relay that I am using as a battery isolator?? I was originaly going to run the 0 gauge wire from the 170 amp alternator directly to the the relay then split it off between the two batteries but the warranty on this load boss alty from dallas, TX says there is to be no fuses or anything like that between the alt and the battery. This gauge operates on a magnetic transducer pick-up sensor and the only reason I could think of for not using it in the traditional sense as an alt ammeter is that the magnetic transducet couldn't take the heat. The goal of having it infront of the trunk battery was to get a sense of what the output of the $300 alternator was that I bought! I think I may try to pick up another gauge as they have another for sell and if I can use this one the way I wan't too then I could hook up the second one the way intended by the manufacture after my last battery and before the amps to see actual draw from the amps aswell. Another $30 won't kill me. Thanks in advance, Kevin.
