Does anyone know if the factory tape/CD unit in a 2003 Explorer has a "mute" wire which I can use for my handsfree unit so when the h/f unit rings, the radio will be muted? The radio itself has a "Mute" button.

Thanks but I think pin 7 on the radio in that thread performs a different function. My CD is built into the head unit. My pin 7 is wht grn and the radio display does not change when pin 7 is grounded. Thanks anyway though, I apprciate the effort.

Test thus:- With radio on set DMM to 20VDC, place the black lead to a good ground, then use the red lead to probe each terminal. The correct one will mute the radio and its display will either read MUTE or PHONE.
You will then probably have to solder your muting lead from the H/F kit to that terminal.
Hints. On UK spec Fords it's usually the third in and GREEN / WHITE was the VSS lead before they went CAN about 05.

If the mute button has a picture of a phone on it, you should be able to mute it in the fashion you wish. I do not think a meter will mute it as Howie suggested, it may take an old fashioned test light.

It does indeed have a picture of a phone on it was well as the word "mute". I did try to probe each wire as per Howie's suggestion but no luck there either. This is a Canadian Explorer and the model of the radio is 2LT2-18C868-DB

how many connectors at the rear of the radio...and number of possible pins in each connector?

OK Craig I ALWAYS use my Snap-On for this job, it's just that certain people keep having a go at me when I dare to suggest that I prefer it, especially when you safely need to trigger certain circuits such as lock triggers, it's much faster than using a DMM.

I have 3 connectors. One only has 2 wires in it but the plug can hold more. One has 4 wires, and the biggest one has space for 16 pins but I think only 15 are occupied. I have to knock off for the night but I'll confirm plugs and wire colours tomorrow. I can also take a picture and post tomorrow. Again, thanks to all.
