Need help (desperately) to disable this annoying thing. There is no hidden button or switch, as in most cases. Only a flashing red light on the dashboard. I found the "black box" under the seat. It says: VIP Toyota Security Product # 237000 - 1340. It has two plugs, one with several wires, the other with just one. According to the original owner, this car never had a remote control. The reprogramming must be done without one, then. Any suggestions and comments on how I should go about disabling it will be greatly appreciated! (Yes, I checked with the local Toyota dealer: "Don't know").

Some times all you have to do is unplug the alarm system, unless there is an onboard starter kill relay in which case you will need to then identify the starter wires and reconnect them. ------------- **ADVANCED MECP CERTIFIED

Thanks for the info.
I already tried unplugging the control box (found under the driver seat)
It stopped the alarm, but also the starter. So, you're right, there must be a relay, somewhere.
Still, I'd much prefer disabling the system, rather than removing it.
I know it can be done as the car came with it disabled by the previous owner.
It only got enabled again by me having to momentarily disconnect the battery. ------------- '97 Camry LE, 2.2L, 5-Spd.

Check this. You will either have one lead in from the starter and one out, I don't know how safe this is but you could meter from the starter input to other wires (I'm guessing either BLACK/ red or BLACK/ orange to see if the vehicle starts with the plugs out, or you should be able to turn this unit on and off from the driver's door key. Third choice, follow the loom, bet there's a connecting plug at the ignition.

Still, I'd much prefer disabling the system, rather than messing around with those wires (by loom, you probably mean harness?).
I know it can be done as the car came with a disabled system (done by the previous owner).

Just a thought, place the key in the drivers door and turn and hold it to the unlock position for 5 seconds. Sequence may also be unlock, then allow key to center then unlock and hold for the 5 seconds.

Hm... never thought of that.
I came across the 5 seconds trick, but that was to be done with the ignition and by pressing simultaneously a hidden button. It's what seems to disable most aftermarket units. Mine is a genuine Toyota (they say) and doesn't have such button.
