grand prix 2004 wiring deviations

Greetings and thank you for your help with wiring I found on your site at

The wires I have left after doing the speakers do not match with anything I can find anywhere. I can get it to work when I connect a certain way but then the radio is always on and so are the lights to the fan and shifter.   Here's what wires I have and what I know about them:

Thick Orange: always on 12v
Thin orange: ?
Two thin purple: ? Maybe for a power antenna?
Blue: ?
Black: appears to be another ground
Gray: light to the fan and shifter
--- then on a three wire connecter which also connected to the factory radio I have:
green w/ white stripe: ?
Black w/ white stripe: ?
Brown w/ white stripe: ?

I had the thick orange and gray connected to the radio's yellow and red wires which works except the radio and fan lights are always on and the car battery runs down so I have to jump it after letting it sit a few days.

Maybe the fuse for the switched 12v is blown? If so it must be a different fuse than the stereo.
Am I the only one with this screwy wiring color scheme?

This has really been frustrating. I would be very grateful for any assistance.

The purple wire is the DATA wire. This is the wire that connects to your computer to tell the radio when to turn on and off. DO NOT CONNECT anything to that wire.

That vehicle does not have a switched 12 volt wire. You must run the red wire of the radio to the fusebox of the vehicle. There is one fuse in the fusebox that has power on it only when the key is in the on position.

Next time, before you cut the plug off, they do make wiring harnesses that will mate up to the vehicle wiring and has the same colors as your aftermarket radio. The correct harness for that vehicle will retail from 70 to 100 dollars. There is a 20 dollar harness that will give you everything except switched. You will have to run the radio's red wire to the fusebox with the cheaper harness.

Removing the factory radio and not opting for the 70 dollar harness means you just lost your door dinger and your retained accessory power wire. The door dinger dings when you leave the key in the ignition and open the door. This alerts you that you are leaving the keys in the ignition. The retained accessory power is what keeps the radio turned on after removing the key. Remember how it used to remain on until you opened the door? That is no longer going to happen.
