sorry. it's a 2000 with the 6 disc in dash changer. i think it has a factory amp. the harness to the stereo doesn't match typical toyota. i added an amp and i get noise w/ the engine running; i think i need to bypass the factory amp(?) if i had the schematic or code to the stereo harness i could figure out the splicing. thanks for the rapid reply!!

If it's anything like the camrys with the 6-speaker system, then it actually has two sets of connectors for the stereo. The one that you'll be looking to tap into is actually not the one directly running to the head unit. The one you want will be in a connector a few inches behind/next to the radio's connector. When it is unplugged the ends will hook up to a standard toyota wiring harness (Metra 70-1761 or equivalent. This is how an aftermarket head unit is installed, too.

So if you're doing a 4-channel amplifier, the speaker wires you should connect to are gonna be the ones that match up with the speaker wires of the metra harness I described above(i.e. NOT wires that run directly to the factory head unit, and this might be where your problem lies).

you're right, esmith69, there is a second harness. it comes out of what looks like a little amp that's mounted behind the stereo. and it is a standard toyota harness. this is the harness i tapped into, because i knew the color coding. but now i think i'm running both amps in series, probably not a good thing. if i knew which wires coming out of the head unit to grab, i could bypass the factory amp, since the other harness is downstream of the amp. i figured out 4 of the wires from the head by cutting them w/ the stereo playing and seeing which speaker goes out, but i don't know if they're pos. or neg. leads. and the rest of the wires (minus power and illumination) don't seem to affect the sound. is there a way to determine pos. and neg. speaker leads? thanks again for all the help!!!

If you have a multimeter you can test for polarity by touching the red test lead to waht you think is the positive speaker wire, and the black test lead to what you think is the corresponding negative speaker wire. If, while the system is on, you get positive voltage, then the wire touching the red test lead is the positive wire. If you get negative voltage, the wire touching the black test lead is the positive wire.
