I found out I need to add a switched 12v to power the new HU i'm putting in my 2003 Jetta.

My fuse block has fuses 6,8,17,27, and 33 open. (no fuse installed) anyone know if these are switched and 12v?

You can test them with a meter assuming there are terminals on one side of the circuit. Before doing that though, I'd check for switched power at the factory radio. Almost all late model Volkswagens have a switched power wire going to the factory radio; sometimes it just turns on with the keysense wire, sometimes it turns on when you turn the key on and stays on until the key is removed, but either way you shouldn't need to run a new wire.

For some reason the metra harness I got dosen't have the 12v switched wire running into it.

Forgot about the one already running to the existing HU.

Anyone know if I can add the wire to the metra harness. My car is leased and I don't wanna have to cut the wire that's there to power the new HU.

you should be able to add the wire to the Metra harness; if not you can always tap into the factory switched wire without cutting it. If my memory serves me right, the switched power wire should be right above the constant power wire in the same connector, and you should be able to stick a thin spade connector into the terminal where it goes.

You can get the power from the fuse panel. There is no Accessory voltage to the radio anymore as they use data to turn it on. That is becoming the norm with oem's now. I use the fuse location that has no fuse in it. Use your meter to find it.

Anyone have a definitive answer?  Is there a switched 12v I can get from the existing radio harness, or do I need to run a line from the fusebox?

I can't give you a definite answer to that, but you're going to have to pull the radio out and connect the harness regardless of where the switched power wire is, and it's not too hard at that point to run a new wire if you don't have a switched wire in the harness.

On another note, the only cars I've ever encountered that use data to turn on are late model GMs. Which Metra harness are you using, the 70-1784? Or something else?

I have 70-9003

I found a fuse list

Ihave fuse 6,8,7,27, and 33 open

I checked 6 and 27 with a multimeter and there's no power running to those.

8 and 17 are open according to the list below, and 33 had no contacts in it.

So I can either figure out where the switch is and run some power to an open fuse spot, or I was thinking use fuse 42 and remove the existing power lead to the radio and put a new one in to run the HU. or tap into that powerline with one of those connectors you clamp on.

MKIV FUSE LIST

1. Washer nozzle heaters, glove compartment light, memory seat control module (10A).
2. Turn signal lights (10A).
3. Fog light relay, instrument panel light dimmer switch (5A).
4. License plate light (5A).
5. Comfort system, cruise control, Climatronic, A/C, heated seat control modules, automatic day/night interior mirror, control module for multi-function steering wheel, control unit in steering wheel (7.5A).
6. Central locking system (5A).
7. Back-up lights, speedometer vehicle speed sensor (VSS) (10A).
8. Open
9. Anti-lock brake system (ABS) (5A).
10. Engine control module (ECM): gasoline engine (10A); diesel engine, Model Year 2000 > (5A).
11. Instrument cluster, shift lock solenoid (5A).
12. Data Link Connector (DLC) power supply (7.5A).

The cigarette lighter fuse or wiring would be good for your switched power lead, assuming that the lighter's only active when the car's on. Can you use the 70-9003 for all the other wires? I've never used on of them before so I'm not sure exactly which wires it has and doesn't have.

It's got the 4 speakers,(GREEN/ GreenBlk,White, WhiteBlk, Gray/GrayBlk, Violet/VioletBlk), Power antenna (blue), 12v memory (yellow), and ground (black).

Ok, I was dumb. Multimeter n00b. I forgot to hold the other meter probe to the car body. (found some bare metal in the door)

6 and 27 are switched. and ~13.8V
