Hi,
I had an aftermarket cassette/radio installed in my Honda with the Factory radio left in behind it to maintain the keyless entry. After working fine for 4 years, it slowly stopped working, and now the keyless entry doesn't work at all. Honda gave me some crap about the receiver must have been removed when the aftermarket stereo installed, which of course makes no sense considering the remote worked fine for 4 years. The original radio is still attached and still getting power. I brought it back to Honda and they said the entire factory radio needs to be replaced, as soething inside the radio is not working, although they didn't take it apart, so I don't get how they knew this.
Is there anyway to fix this problem without buying either a new radio or, more sensibly, a new keyless entry system?

Have you checked the battery in the remote? A battery going bad would make sense why it would slowly stop working and then stop altogether. It also makes sense why it would work fine for 4 years.   You also could check all your fuses. If these things arent the culprit the cheapest fix would probably be an aftermarket keyless entry system. You can find them cheap and they arent that difficult to install. You can get your wire colors and help installing here if you should need it. Let us know

The batteries were the first thing I checked, and Honda guys said they tried with different remotes, too. Although I didn't check each fuse, i assumed since both radios and everything else are getting power, that it's not that (I figured it's not a separate fuse just fro the keyless entry, and also it wouldn't explain the slow death).
Assuming I have know previous experience with installation, but that I am quite capable given the proper guides, would you reccommend this as a do it yourself job? Also, as long as I'm doing it, would it be a big hassle to add a trunk release?
I'd appreciate any guides /diagrams/reccommendations that you could send my way.

I dont think you would have any problems. No its not a big deal on the trunk release. When you choose a unit get one with an optional output to do the trunk.  Onboard relays  would simplify it even more but, its not that big of a deal if it doesnt have them.   You can get an idea of prices by searching ebay.  You could even get remote start if you wanted but, obviously that would complicate the job. Once you make a choice let us know and we will help you  out. Here is a sheet for that car.
