Grand Cherokee 2001 Dead Dash

I have a transient problem with th dash going dead. normally the engine continues to run but lately when the dash dies it runs rough. The dealers computer shows unable to duplicate. Any ideas...

turn the key on, then off, then on, then off, then on and leave it in that position. your odometer will read you codes if the engine is throwing any. then you can either look them up or post them and we will.

you mentioned the dash goes dead. do you mean lighting, power, guages? off the top you might try pressing the instrument cluster from as close to edge of the bezel, as possible, firmly forward towards the windshield, you may hear or feel a noticable engagement. reason being; the cluster interfaces a set of "docking" ports. the ports are essentially a stationary connector mounted to the sub-dash it allows for easier acess to the device. but it is also lockless so the cluster is held in place by the bezel and its attacment to the sub-dash. while the dock's attachent  to the sub-dash is somewhat loose and slightly mobile. thoroughly inspect, the dock's wire loom. it will most likely be routed just below the defrost  panel and drop in on the right side of the radio. it ties into the loom that distributes power to HVAC etc. then on to the main connector at the PCM's platform. point being is; the loom is in tight confines as it passes over the drivetrain tunnel.surrounded by; firewall, bottom of blower assembly, and the sub-dash support bracket that connects to the floor. if you dont see additional OEM protective sheathing here,..chances are good you've got an abrasion on the loom. i discovered the condition on my laredo.
