I have posted at Automotive Forums to no avail...

I need some help w/ this one. My wife has a 98 Montero Sport 4X4 and last week she went over a bump and here "e-brake" light went on and will not go off. Brake didn't engage and works perfectly still the light stays on.

I have tried checking the cables, they are fine and untouched. I have checked the switch at the ebrake under the armrest, the switch is fine and produced continuity when drepressed. I even took the neg. cable off batery and tried to clear the light..... ARGGGGG

I am assuming that this simple little plunger type switch is just a patch to ground ( when the ebrake is down the ground is broken-- light off, when you pull the ebrake ground is made-- light on.

I am going crazy trying to figure this one out. Any thought would be greatly appreciated, and hopefully keep me from ripping the entire truck apart for a stupid light.

So have you tested the wire to see if it's continuity is to ground or not ?

Not yet... I actually thought that w/ the switch being good that there would be no chance of a problem in the wire since it sees no rubbing or heat..

Do you think that the wire might have a break somewhere down the line?

I mean to say that the switch is just a simple clip that is grounded via a screw to the e-brake bracket, with a plastic plunger (spring loaded) on top and a metal clip that has a wire running off it under the carpet.

I can only see this being a ground connection. I guess that a break in the wire would cause the light to be on all the time as if the brake was pulled and the plunger switch was "grounded".

It just seems unlikely that this well protected wire would be disrupted by going over a speedbump, and slow at that.

I've seen stranger events in vehicles. Check for continuity on the wire to make sure and post your results.

I guess that will have to be my next step. I was hopeing that someone might have had the same problem and hook me up w/ the fix.

Lets just say that I get continuity to ground on the wire... Then what? Is it possible that the comp. is sending the light? I have no check engine or other "idot" lights.

ARGGGGGGGG!!!! I hate little gremlins like this.
