My question concerns installing a stereo in a 2002 cavalier that has the airbag wired straight to the factory radio. If at all posible I would like to know any alternative routes (i.e. ignition wires from steering column ect.) and any useful diagrams would be greatly appreciated. thank you.

The air bag is not wired straight to the radio rather the air bag reset is attached to the radio. If you take out the radio, you have the air bag light stay on the dash. Metra makes a harness that will add an aftermarket CD player to the stock wiring and you still get rid of the OEM deck. Look here:

It is all lies! You can remove the factory stereo without problems, I have hundreds of people to back me up. All that happens is your door chimes stop working.

That's true I just did a 2002 Cavalier last week. Last week I did one with no problem at all. The door chime stop working. It no longer chimes if lights are on, door open, trunk open, or the key is in the ignition.

Is up to the installer to test all wires with a DMM whenever possible.

I have an 02 cavalier. I changed out the factory deck. I bought the wire harness to relocate the factory radio. I installed the aftermarket deck, ran the wire to the trunk and mounted the factory in the trunk. After everything was done and working fine. I unplugged the harness to the factory deck and left it off for a couple of days. The only thing that was missing was the door chime, like when you leave your lights on and open the drivers door. Other than that it does not hurt anything.

A couple of good links I've referenced in the past that deal with GM's class 2 wiring BSposted_image:
