Is there an elegant way to tap reverse, other than at the tail light?
Might AllData have the info? where does one look it up?

The HU needs the signal for a rear view camera.

I haven't done this but..... there should be a wire that sends the info to the ECU that the car is in reverse, you could use that to a relay or find the factory reverse light relay and tap into that.
