i'm wiring in a huge set of air horns for a customer... he wants them wired into the stock horn button on the steering wheel. (with a switch to override as well).

i am having trouble locating the horn wire. i have been told it's a negative wire, and it is dark blue... i cannot take the steering wheel apart as i have never done it before, and do not want to risk popping the airbag. i'm sure it has got to come down under the dash somewhere.   can anyone tell me where and which wire it is exactly? maybe a pic? or does someone know for certain where it is?

i can tell you that i HAVE dropped the lower panel on the column. i can see about a dozen wires, but have no idea which it is, or if it is even visible there.

any info would be great!

it is a dark blue wire in steering column. take off the steering column shroud. Really easy.

First Step, temolve 3 phillips screws on the bottom of the shroud, two on drivers side and 1 on pass side of the bottom. Next, start the truck with the key. Then if you notice, there is another hole on the bottom of shroud, take a small screwdriver and put it up in that hole. there is a small pellet that you can push in and the ignition switch will come out. then unsnap the shroud and get the wire.!!

The harness comes out on the left side of the steering column...Big bundle...Its in the same harness you find the 12v Violet/green ig,blue/grren and starter, RED / blue......the horn will be the only smaller guage blue in this harness.

thanks for the help guys...

first, ryudapump, that's not how this is setup i think. on the bottom of the steering column, there is ONE screw on the left side (drivers side) and 2 on the right (passenger).  did you say it backwards?   second, i think i know the hole you're talkin about on the botton of the column.  why should i have to push it up and take the ignition module out?  i removed the 3 screws yesterday, and the bottom shroud pupped down.  it was kinda jammed where it connects to the dash, but i'm sure i can wiggle it out.

judging by hwo the wires are all tucked up in there, i don't think i can tap onto one from there.  i was hoping i can find it under the dash somewhere easier, where i can cut it, and tap into it for the switch. (i'm wiring in a toggle switch so he can use the regular horns, or the air horns) .

someone told me it would be easier to disconnect the battery, pop the two plastic covers off the back of the steering wheel,  and remove the airbag assembly.  true?  is this dangerous with the airbag?  i work on diesel trucks for a living, so this is a bit different for me!

thanks for the help though... let me know if what i'm saying is correct

i gave you the wrong info i think.....its the old body style f150, right? if so, pull the underdash down, and to the right of the column you will find a 7 or 8 pin plug........you can get your blue horn wire there.

you the man!  yes, it is the "old" body style.  it's the body style that was from 97-03. (actually this is an 04 heritage, which is the old body style... they made both in 04).

so that panel just pulls off?

no, there is like 7 or 8, 7mm fasteners, and 2 8mm that you have to pull. The plastic panel that is right above the steering column, just below the dash cluster pulls off, and there is a 7mm there that needs to be pulled. I work on a ford lot, so i will go look at an f150 now........you might be able to get to the wire without pulling anything. Ill get back to you

Alright, just looked at one.......look up under the dash....to the right of the steering column you will see 3 connectors in a row.. white, brown, and black......in the brown connector you can find the blue -ve horn wire. No need to pull anything apart.

dude, you are the friggin man.  you went above and beyond!

thanks a TON.  i'll look on the truck here in a little while to see if i can find it

you're absolutely sure that's the right blue wire?   caus i looked up under there the other day and saw a couple blue wires on different connectors

hey man, i went and loked at it.  if i look under my dash, i do see 3 connectors that are on teh passenger side of the steering column (tucked up a bit... bout 6 inches).  but, i do not have a white one.  i have GREEN brown and black.  the brown one has a solid blue wire on it, but so does the green one!   i guess i'll just cut them both and see which one makes the horn stop blowing!

yeah, i looked at an expedition (no old body style f150s out here.....odd), which has all the same wiring, that one plug color is the only difference. I would try the blue on the brown connector first.

ok, i got it semi-installed :P too many projects right now!

got th switch mounted on the left side of the steering column, and wired in. you were right... it was the blue wire on the brown plug. flip up, air horns, flip down, regular horns... now to wire in the relay, air solenoid, power to compressor, pressure switch....etc.etc... list goes on and on.

thanks for your persistent help on this. i know i'm new here, but i appreciate it! you should've seen me hooking back up the battery after unplugging that plug under the dash... i said a prayer hoping the airbag wouldn't go off. i love airbags, but i hate messing with the wiring around them!

thanks again. i'll post pics of the install when i'm completely done!
