I recently purchased a Garmin nuvi 760, and would like to hardwire it to my '03 Taurus rather than plugging it into the 12v plug in the dash. Since my unit has the tmc traffic receiver built into the power adapter, what I plan on doing is buying one of those cheap 12v adapter splitters and cutting it apart so I have a 12v plug that the garmin adapter can plug into and then bare wires on the other end that I can tap into somewhere for power. Normally I'd just tap into the back of my 12v plug in the dash, but I'd like something where the power turns off when the car does. My dash 12v plug stays on constantly, and I know it wouldn't be good for the tmc adapter to have it constantly drawing power even when the car is off. Can someone suggest a place I can splice the power into that would turn on and off with the car?

Though I consider myself technically competent enough to perform this install, I know nothing about the wiring of an '03 Taurus so if anyone who can make a suggestion can describe where I might find the wires, that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me out.

you could pigtail off of a fuse in your fuseblock drivers side u/dash or you could tap into the ignition harness but use a fuseholder

Use a female socket like you stated earlier.  It is recommended to solder your power connection at the ignition harness.  Fuse holder isn't necessary because if you use a socket then it will use the fuse on garmin dc plug.

What about splicing in to the wires behind the stereo? Could I use the ignition wire from the stereo to power the GPS, or do I need to hook it into the ignition harness?

Also, if I do need to connect to the ignition harness, where exactly would I find that, and what wire would I be looking for?

Remove the 2 8mm bolts under the drivers dash and remove the knee bolster. You will see a harness coming from the left side of the steering column, it will have a gray plastic cover there. It's the RED / green wire...

thanks, I appreciate it. Now for what will hopefully be my final question. When I take apart the 12v splitter to get the socket and two wires I'll need, how can I tell which of the two wires coming off the socket needs to be the power, and which needs to be the ground?

Just went outside to take a look under the dash. found a bunch of wires under there. Found one RED / green wire that was very thick, thicker than the rest. I also saw another thinner RED / green wire under there as well. Do you happen to know which of these I'll need to splice into?

Also, should I assume since you didn't mention it that it is NOT a good idea to splice into the wires going into the stereo?

it's the thicker RED / green wire-this is your ignition wire-you should allso see some other thick wires running with it

check for continuity between the outside ring of the female cig lighter plug and one of the wires coming off of it.   This is your negative wire, you could also check for continuity between the end of the plug inside and one of the wires to find the positive wire.
