I recently purchased a Garmin nuvi 255W, and would like to hardwire it to my '09 Malibu rather than plugging it into the 12v plug in the dash. I plan on doing is buying one of those cheap 12v adapter splitters and cutting it apart so I have a 12v plug that the garmin adapter can plug into and then bare wires on the other end that I can tap into somewhere for power. Normally I'd just tap into the back of my 12v plug in the dash, but I'd like something where the power turns off when the car does. My dash 12v plug stays on constantly, can someone suggest a place I can splice the power into that would turn on and off with the car?

I have good access to the passenger side foot area where the fuse box is and also the shifter area.

Any help would be apprciated!

Well on some units...It does NOT need 12v...Inside the cigarette plug adapter it can step the voltage down...Like on newer sirius units...They only need like 5-6 volts...So the easiest way to do it...First look at the cig plug....Usually they list the voltage and polarity on the plug somewhere...So if you do not want to hack the harness...Simply wrap wires around the cig plug...Pay attention to polarity...But normally the tip is +...and the sides are negative...So wrap a wire around the tip...Tape it up...Do the same w/ the negative tabs on the side of plug...Wrap wire around and tape...At this point you need to find the Accessory wire in the ignition harness...And the wire you wrapped around the tip will go the acc wire...The wires wrapped on the sides will go to ground...Normal GM colors are orange and brown for accessory...Will look up your vehicle and post colors...This way if you ever want to re-use the cig lighter plug(in a different car) or the nuvi...Just un-hook ...My 2 cents...!

BTW...There is usually a fuse inside the cig plug...But just to be safe...Make sure you fuse the + wire going to Acc...You can use two female spades...The fuse legs will fit perfectly into the slots...! So cut the power wire from cig plug(the one you added that goes to Accessory in car...!)...Crimp a female spade on each side and insert the fuse...! Hope This Helps
