I want to install a back up camera to my truck camper which will plug directly into the plug on my 2010 Ford F350 for the tailgate back up camera ( truck has factory Nav/ Back up camera on tailgate displayed through Nav scrreen) . I disconnected the plug ( a " jointing block" style containing 5 wires ) and removed the tailgate. I do not want to attempt to remove the camera from the tailgate but install one at the rear of the camper and drop back in the tailgate at the end of the season. Local ford dealers do not carry in stock but quote $ 450 Canadian for the camera. I'm not sure of how the camera is fitted at the factory as I assume that the wires attached to the camera are fed through the hole in the handle of the tailgate - but the plug at the end is too large to have first fitted through this small round hole and I can't see them then crimping the wires to the block  once fed through.

I would appreciate any suggestions re options for either a camera to mate with the factory plug or if I have to buy a factory tailgate camera, if there is an intermediate connector within the length of wiring ( which is contained within the body of the tailgate ) to enable the camera to be fed from the top down and the end the plug from the bottom of the tailgate up.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Ken.

Only a factory camera will plug directly in. However it may be alot cheaper to buy a decent aftermarket cam. I will also give you better mounting options

Most aftermarket cams will have 4 leads 12v(reverse input) , Ground, Video (+) and Video(-)

The Video(+,-) are usually a female RCA

these wires should be found in the factory plug the 5th wire is most likely a shield but it could be something else. You will have to hardwire them in ie: test, cut, solder then insulate each connection

Hope my input helps

hi,

i do believe the camera and cable in the tailgate are two separate pieces.  a call to your ford dealer would tell for sure.  order a tailgate cable and splice your own wiring for the trailer camera.

check out ford part number 8C3Z-14A411-B

Thank you both for the suggestions. I shall see if my local Ford dealer has a schematic for the camera and cable and go from there.

Regards

Ken
