Subject: Pioneer AVH-P6500DVD?

I had an AVH-P6400CD installed in my Montero a few days ago, however, I decided to upgrade to the P6500DVD w/ touch screen.  I should be getting the unit delivered next week. Directly attached to the head unit via the IP-bus cables is the GEX-P6400 tv tuner, CD-VS33 video switcher, AVIC-90 nav, and the GEX-P900XM xm unit.

My question is: Will the P6500DVD be a direct swap out with the 6400CD? Is the wiring harness the same? Judging by the input options I've read about, these two units are pretty much the same as far as the connections in the back of the unit.

Thanks in advance,    Jeff

By the way, if anyone wants a 3 day old AVH-P6400CD, pm me with an offer. Keep in mind, If the 6500dvd is a direct swap out, I will have new cables to go along with the 6400cd + factory box and manuals.

The wiring harness is identical, the rca harness is not. 6400CD doesnt not have a brain the 6500DVD does. I picked up the 6500DVD two weeks ago and it blows my 6400CD away! Boy im glad i upgraded huge difference.

Thanks for the reply.

In other words, in response to your post, what can I expect as far as needing extra hardware or additional cables? Do I need to pick up the P7000 processor as well in order to feed my amps? or are you just stating the rca harness is different. Pardon me if these are dumb questions... posted_image

Nope the 6500DVD is complete ready to go to work with your amps, the rca harness connector that goes into the deck is a little smaller thats the only difference. The 6500DVD comes with a brain(its very small only bout 6 inches by 4 inches)

I got mine through Truevalueelectronics on e-bay for $1119.00, but I think they have one or some left at $1149.00  I won the auction prior to the real release of the unit (April 28th) so they ended up shipping it on May 2nd. I got it today (Tuesday, May 6th) installed it and am very impressed with it so far. It integrates with the rest of my Pioneer components perfectly (Avic90DVD, Gex6400 tv tuner, VS33 switcher, & PS2) The picture is fantastic; the touch screen is very cool; and the sound to my eclipse amps and Focal poly kevlars is as clean as can be!

As far as the 7500, check E-tronics or GOPCplus.

does the 6500 unit have a built in subwoofer control and tv tuner card?  is it worth waiting for the 7500 ?

Yes, the 6500 has a built in sub control. No integrated tuner within the unit itself, but the GEX-6400 interfaces via an IP cable seamlessly. As far as the 7500, I'm not too familiar with the specs so I cannot answer either way whether it is worth the wait or not. Nonetheless, I am very happy with the 6500 mainly because of its marriage with the AVIC90 navigation component.

I thought that the avic 90 did not have touch screen menus?  Wouldn't you have to manually input the addresses?  You would need to use the avic 80 which has the new updated navigation disk?  By the way, does anybody know if the avic 80 is out yet?  It should cost less than the outgoing avic 90 model because it doesn't have a dvd video player, only dvd rom.

For the first time, Pioneer will offer DVD-Audio for in-car use, demonstrating the increasing popularity of multi-channel music. The AVH-P7500DVD offers these unique features:

  • DVD-Audio (AVH-P7500DVD only) - Listeners are encompassed in high fidelity sound with DVD-Audio playback for multi-channel music. The availability of DVD-Audio titles continues to grow, with several hundred currently on the market.
  • Dolby Digital 5.1 Channel (AVH-P7500DVD only) - Experience multi-channel digital sound on the road with the built-in Dolby® Digital and DTS™ decoder. Six high-volt (5V) pre-amp outputs, five full range and a discrete subwoofer output, provide 5.1 channels of surround sound.
  • Dolby Pro Logic II (AVH-P7500DVD only) - The built-in Dolby Pro Logic II decoder produces multi-channel surround sound from any stereo source. The system uses matrix decoding to transform a two-channel signal from CD, MP3, XM or television to 5.1-channel surround sound.
  • Multi-Channel Auto Equalizer (AVH-P7500DVD only) - For the first time in the industry, Pioneer designed a multi media center that automatically sets the equalizers to optimize the sound in any vehicle - even for multi-channel applications.
  • TV tuner (AVH-P7500DVD only) - On air broadcast can be accessed while the car is parked using the built-in diversity TV tuner.

"Popular features found in home entertainment products continue to be adopted into the car environment," said Michael Townsen, vice president of marketing for the mobile entertainment division of Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc. "People want the same quality, control and convenience they get from home electronics in the car."

All of Pioneer's new multi-media centers contain key features that enhance the in-car experience:

  • Touch Panel Operation - Three audio/video displays, AVH-P7500DVD, AVH-P6500DVD and AVD-W6210, use touch panel screens and an easy-to-follow graphic user interface to simplify all audio, video and navigation functions. Pioneer touch panel screens provide crisp picture quality that minimizes reflection without adversely affecting contrast levels.
  • DVD-Video (DVD-R/RW) - Pioneer's media centers can play conventional DVD-Video as well as DVD-R/RW discs. As consumers use this DVD technology more often to record programs from television or to record home movies, they can be assured that those home-made discs will play back on Pioneer in-car DVD players.
  • MP3 - The extremely popular MP3 compressed audio format can be played on Pioneer multi-media centers.
  • Dual Zone - Dual zone capabilities enable simultaneous playback of two media sources at the same time, allowing playback of DVD movies or CDs for rear passengers while front passengers listen to AM, FM or satellite radio broadcast.

I have a 2002 GMC enovy and i am in the process of installing  the 6500 in the dash.

I have two main questions.

1) are there any kits you know that would but the unit on the lower half a 1.5 din kit?  so fat i have only found kits that let you mount a unit on the top din and leave the lower half din open, the problem is when the screen flips out it blocks the AC vents.

2) I have heard some things that touch screens leave lots of stains on the lcd and are bad for watching DVDs, has anyone else found this to be true?  Also what do you clean the screen with if this is the case?

thanks

Oil from your fingers will constantly have you cursing your touch screen.  Its a cool feature, but have very high maintenance.

so what do you do to remove the oil and clean the screen?

You just have to do a good job of cleaning it often.  If seeing fingerprints doesnt bother you, then it wont be a big deal.

The AVH-P6500DVD and 7500DVD both use touchscreen technology that has been in place in Japanese OEM autos for many, many years.  We have gone to great lengths to ensure that it is grease and smudge resistant.  Not only that, but we also upgraded the gears and motors on the screens, so that the constant pushing won't degrade them prematurely.

The AVIC-90DVD can be upgraded for touchscreen capability with the new CN-DV21 DVD-ROM.  The retail price for the software is $299.

Please keep in mind that ANY Pioneer products purchased through eBay or from an online retailer (other than Crutchfield) will NOT be covered by ANY kind of warranty.

I installed a 7500 in my truck last weekend, it is by far the coolest piece available....it blows everything else out of the water.......eclipse, panasonic, alpine, clarion, all of them are gonna have to go back to the drawing board.

Do you have the Pioneer TV antenna? I'm told it has very good reception compared to others.

Also, the parking brake cut off...Pioneer uses a standard ground connection for bypass correct?

Pioneer includes 2 tv antennas with the 7500--which is awesome, there is a parking brake wire---like most dash mounted video systems--but it sounds like you already know what to do.

The one thing that most wont expect, it is a 5.1 receiver, so you will need a Y adaptor for your subwoofer out.....

Unlike all previous pioneer headunit/brain setups, the new models have significantly smaller brains...all audio rca connections are at the back of the radio.  There are additional audio/video jacks on the brain....the one set back that I have ran into are the 2 data cables from the hu to the brain, they are rather short, so you are forced to install the brain fairly close to the dash, pioneer has no plans as of yet to make extension cables.

Installed and loving it!!! OMG what else could I really ask for??? Well I won't go there.

I was unaware the unit came with the antenna. I knew the tuner was built in, but that's it, what a plus. Everything is working perfect.

You're right I wasn't expecting the single output for the sub so I did have to use a Y. Fortunately I have plenty stored away.

As for the cables...I curently have the "brain" under my dash. I'm am most likely going to relocate it this weekend under the pass. seat. Lucky for me the cables are plenty long to make the stretch.

Dolby sounds great even if I'm missing a center channel, I guess I know what's next on the shopping list.

I ran the Auto EQ & TA today, and it made a world of change.

All I can say is that this unit is a must have if you are looking for a high quality and multi-featured AV system.

I'm putting in a 6500 and I'm wondering how to bypass the green parking brake wire???  Ground it?  Ground it with an in-line switch?

I put in the 7500 with the xm tuner (separate hideaway unit), and the AVIC-90. Got carried away with a 4 chanell amp for front and rear and a 2 chanell for a single 10" sub I"m building into the rear of my 4runner. Also bought a center speaker that came with some other unit, then disassembled it and built it into the dash. Don't have the sub going yet and I can say this freakin' setup rivals or exceedes my home unit!! The touch screen only shows prints in certain circumstances - if you'll be watching a movie in that light, well, you ought to move your vehicle.
Lotto a damn wires!!!

How does the XM information appear on the 7500dvd screen?  Is there artist, song title, and XM channel shown on the display all at the same time?  Or do you have to switch between song title and artist?  If you purchased the GEX-910 XM unit, do you have scrolling capabilities beyond the 16 characters?  I am trying to decide if I want to purchase a portable XM unit rather than the hideaway unit and the display and controls are a deciding factor.

There's surprisingly only one line at a time displayed for the xm unit.    You can push a button on the unit or remote to advance to station #, artist, song, etc. I do wish I could see the title and artist at the same time and I'm surprised Pioneer didn't use a little more real estate for it. Outside that I love my Pioneer.

I installed a backup camera for my 7500 and the screen output automatically switches to the camera when I switch into reverse. Pretty cool feature and my friends are pretty impressed as well.
