I just got this system Alpine IVA-C800. It is the indash cd version with 6.5" Screen. First can i add any DVD changer to this sytem or there are specific brands? Also if i took this to best buy to install it, I heard that they will put that safety feature which will not allow the video to play when vehicle is moving. Are they require by law to do that or can i just tell em not to enable this thing. Also if i wanted to add a navigation system later to the system will it then allow me to view video or navigation map while vehical is moving. Please let me know. thanks 2000 Ford F150XLT..

well as for that pesky safety feature i also had that problem. The way to get rid of it is by connecting to a ground it should work. And as for whether or not a dvd changer would work for it usually you could check the alpine website. Usually brands will make many products that seemlessly go together such as dvd changers-tv tuners etc. for a specific head unit.

First thing, the safety feature is built into the radio, not just installed. It is really annoying to get around this one due to both the e-brake and regular brake need to be hooked up. You can add any two inputs into the iva, this can be any combination of dvd, vcr, or game systems, if you have the alpine piece then it would just work through the iva's remote eye. And as far as the nav go's, yes you can view the display and map when you are moving.

Yes larger retail chains such as best buy will not bypass the emergency brake safety. My advice would be to go to a smaller local shop and most likely they will by pass it. However I would make it clear in the beginning that you want to disable the feature before they start your install if.

In the case of alpine you need to hold the regular brake down and pump the e-brake once and then lock the e-brake then release the regular brake. There is no grounding of the e-brake for it to display video.

So how exactly do you bypass the safety feature? Do you just ground both wires?

You need a toggle switch to act as an e-brake passing ground to the iva, and you need a momentary switch acting as a regular brake passing a +12V to the iva. Basically this way you would hold the momentary switch and flip the toggle on-off-on then release the momentary switch and the video would stay on until you turn the car off/radio turns off.

Find someone that likes to do audio in your area for cheap, because he just like to do wiring, like me. Will do a better job, and for cheaper.

sure thing, just find anybody with a screwdriver and ask them to do it... then when something goes wrong, just go back to him and ask him to fix/replace it... the only advantage to getting an install done professionally is the fact that every major shop gives you a lifetime warranty on the install. if billy bob down the street breaks your dash getting the deck in, you're gonna eat that one yourself... shops have insurance (not to mention more experience) that deals with that type of stuff. but as for the safety system in the alpine deck, there is a relay pack made that defeats the two safety wires... how do you think they get working models in stores? the display units are exactly the same as the ones you buy. you just have to hunt down the piece... and just for the record, alpine's one of the only companies that requires this piece. most makes like kenwood, pioneer, and sony simply require the safety wire to be grounded.

I'd rather install the cd player in my Ford myself rather than pay some stereo installation place $30-60 to do it. Especially since it's like 12 wires, and all you need is a $7 harness at Wal-Mart and a coathanger (or stereo removal clips).
Here's another place to look for car stereo removal help:
https://www.carstereohelp.com/ They have about every car on there, or something close.

First off, well said Philaf. I could not agree with you any more. This vehicle is not all that hard to work with but as with any vehicle you're always taking a risk whenever you're working on it. Some people are fine with tinkering on their own vehicle, and others wouldn't dare try to replace even a lightbulb. It's all personal preference and many owners want that kind of reassurance that their car will be taken care of. As auex points out this is going to be more than just a simple in-dash mobile video install. You're going to need to wire up two switches and mount them somewhere, find the right power and ground connections, etc. In your situation I would recommend first TRYING a local shop to see if they are even willing to do it. More and more places, even the smaller shops, are starting to not do installs involving bypassing the built-in safety features of mobile electronics products, mostly due to the simple fact that it is ILLEGAL to bypass these features in pretty much every US state now. Best Buy and all larger stores would never consider bypassing it, I can guarantee you that--they're too paranoid about lawsuits and liability. ------------- Ethan
