I have a 1997 Lincoln Town Car which had an air bag in the steering wheel. I pulled the airbag out and installed a 5" tv monitor. Now my problem is that my wires keep getting pinched as I turn the steering wheel so I keep blowing fuses. What can I do to get rid of this problem? Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

i don't know excatly how your steering column is. but have you tried running the wire inside something protected loike split-loom or a rubber tubing.. it seems to work because its hard for it to get pinched if its rubber.

*** Isnt removing the airbag nad putting in a tv illegal??? Well airbag kill.. mite as well watch tv before...

Thanks for the advise eckoblaze72.  You see, there is very little space between the actual steering wheel and the steering column.  I've tried split loom but it didn't seem to work for long.  It only lasted for about 3 days.  Let me try some type of rubbery material and see if this does work.  It sucks having a nice custom 5" tv monitor on your steering wheel that doesn't turn on because of a wiring problem.  The screen looks good and I've already received tons of compliments on it but what's the use if I can't fire it up.  I'm sorry but I haven't had time to take pics.  Anymore suggestions are REALLY appreciated!!!  I like your quote by the way.

what you can do a lot of the time is use the air bag wires to get your power and ground and what not up to the tv.

have you actually taken the steering wheel completely apart, or did you just put the screen in while it was still on the column? if you've taken the thing off, you should have seen a cavity going down near the center of the thing... you would figure that if they can get radio controls and cruise on the wheel, not to mention a horn, they'd have to have somewhere to run the wires...

I know I should have used the wires that were in there in the first place for the horn and cruise control but I yanked everything out before I figured that out......stupid of me!!!  Yes I have removed the whole steering wheel out.  I've had several shops take a look at it and none of them can come up with a solution.  I've just about had it with this tv thing!!!!

What about using the clockspring?

There is none, the car had some other type of wiring but my stupidness threw it all away.  Where can I find one?

Best bet is the dealer, of course, but I know they're going to get their pound of flesh. Depending on where you're at, the next best thing is a late model boneyard- but you'll want a car that's been centerpunched or stuffed in the rear. You can also try eBay. Another suggestion is try looking for a Crown Vic or Grand Marquis- I think the columns are the same, but check first. Also, you're not limited to '97- I think '96-'03 is the same. Again, check first. A standard one may carry enough leads to cover power and both sides of your video signal- most clocksprings are set up for power and ground to the bag, and horn. Remember to get the all of the associated wiring that goes with it!
Now- when you find one in a wreck, do not just jerk it out- it MUST remain centered in relation to the position of the front wheels. The best way to do this is steer the wheels straight ahead, then remove the clockspring. I have to do to a boneyard run tomorrow, I can have a quick look and see if I find anything.

hotrodelectric - I would greatly appreciate it if you can find out for me.  I'll pay you for your time.  So far you have given me the best information yet.  You have been a lot of help.  I'll start calling around my area.  95-97 Lincolns have the same exact parts and you are right, also the Crown Victorias and Grand Marquis share the same.  I guess that the best way to go.  Please let me know if you find something for me.  Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!

OK- I didn't find anything on my junkyard run usable for you. I just looked up www.parts.com and plugged in my zipcode and found a parts place here in San Diego that sells genuine Ford at a good discount.

They had the clockspring- the Lincoln one was 67.00, and the Ford/Mercury one was 25.00. The Lincoln one probably covers cruise control and wheel-mounted radio controls- verify before you order! Question- on your monitor, is it simply an RCA for video signal (I'm guessing your audio is through the speakers) or do you require a buss cable? The reason I'm asking is I am trying to tote it up in my head the number of contacts you'll need to make this work. Also- does the monitor need more than 2-3 amps to operate? The internal tape is not very heavy at all- probably equal to a 20ga line at best, and that would be the horn connection. I'm guessing the power need for an LCD monitor is small.

Thanks very much for the info.  Yes, my monitor only uses an RCA connection.  The monitor is very small so it doesn't need much to power it.  No audio is ran through this wiring.  All I'm trying to connect is a video signal to the monitor (2 wires), power to the monitor (1 wire) and an illumination wire that goes to the button lights on the steering wheel itself.  Ground I can get from the center bolt on the wheel.  So I guess a total of 4 wires is what I need.  I'll be calling them first thing tomorrow morning (or shall I say today).
