Does this have to be hooked up  for the unit to work??

If it does i am not sure where to tap into this wire on my vehicle, it is a 1993 ford taurus.  any help would be appreciated.

Ground this wire and you will have bypassed the safety feature on the Pioneer unit permanently. Otherwise you can attach to your emergency brake wire that grounds out.
