I am planning on installing a 6.8" monitor in an Avalanche with sunroof. Can someone please advise on how to mount monitor. I did alot of car audio work in the past so the wiring shouldn't be a problem. I am not sure the best way to mount unit.
Is there bars to fasten too or do they normally fasten to head liner on this size unit?
I believe the avalanche has the option of coming with a 7 inch factory drop down monitor / dvd, similar to the one that comes in the Escalade EXT, Silverado, and Tahoes. You may want to look into trying to get one of these. I know it will probably cost more, but it could be easier to install, since the holes and bars to bolt it to are probably already cut-out, but just hidden under the headliner. Although the wiring may be a bit more difficult.
Anyways, I know the ones installed in suburbans are mounted to bars, not just the headliner.
Hope this helps
There should be a metal brace in the headliner about 10 inches back from the dome light. Also if you remove the domelight there is a metal sunroof brace that can also be used.
go to autozone or a body shop and get some kitty hair that you mix like bondo...mix it on a small piece of wood that will fit between the metal of the roof and the headliner and press it up, when it dries you will have plenty to screw to and the monitor wont shake while driving.

For an avalanche with a sunroof you want to first remove the domelight. Doing so reveals a factory beam which you can screw into. Look at the beam and note the low spots/dips in the beam. These are where you want to screw into. Position your tv accordingly so that the screw holes on your tv lineup with the grooves in the beam and mark the beam. Drill a 1/8" pilot holes in the beam and find screws that are just long enough to screw into the beam a few threads. Depending on the tv you will probably have to cut the domelight opening a little bigger.
Now for the other side of the tv you want to put a piece of wood on top of the headliner. Nothing crazy just small piece of 1/2" MDF maybe 3" x 10" or something again depending on your tv. Lineup your first holes with the tv and then mark the other holes on the headliner so you know where to position the wood. Cut out a portion of the headliner where your other holes are and secure the wood up there. Basically take some short screws and screw through the headliner into your wood to keep it in place. Otherwise you will never get a screw into the wood because you'll just be pushing it up.
Once that's all done run your wires and put the tv in place once again, screw it up. After that VERY SLOWLY push the sunroof shade back to see if it hits anything or catches any screws. If so, back those screws out. Anytime you have a sunroof your not dealing with a lot of space which is why finding the right length screws is so important.
Good luck,
Mike

You should take it to a local audio shop..They should do the entire install for around 250.00
I paid $350 to have an over head installed in a Tahoe with sunroof.
