Subject: Copy a Navigation dvd
Date Posted: June 04, 2004 at 7:45 PM

I just purchased a Avic n1 and want to make a copy of the nav cd. before i ruin it, Is this possible, I checked the properties of the dvd and its 6.81 gig and i can only find 4.7 dvds. Is it double sided and if so do i need a special dvd burner?

thanks

DVD 9 burners and dvds ( may be called something else but it is just a 9 gig dvd ) aren't readily available yet, so just take very good care of the one you have.

pioneer has just released the disk version 1.1 so if urs is a 1.0 send it to them and thell get you the new one
as far as copying a navi disk i highly doubt it is possible. plus pioneer charges 380 bucks for a new one for the avic80, i can only guess the avic n1's will be more expensive

Just go to the pioneer web site and register.

They will send the disks (and a free visor cd holder) automatically.

you can see if it is double sided by looking at both sides of the disc. Usually you have a label like "Side A" and "Side B" in the center ring. Plus you can tell by looking at the two surfaces.

If you dont want to ruin your original, you can copy the stuff you really need. They probably have other stuff like stuff you need to run on the homePC that wont be necessary while navigating in the car. So just copy what you need for the "road" disc and the rest to the "home" disc. I don't have that disc so I cant tell you a definite answer but I always do backup my stuff (cd or Dvd) for safety reasons..

They are not double sided.  They are dual layered (or DVD 9).  There is a burner out now (Sony) that will burn dual layer disks, but the disks are very hard to find.  Also the Sony burns DVD+R DL disks, and I believe the Pioneer will only play DVD-R disks.

Yup, just saw it in the paper this weekend, like $299. However, I haven't seen any blank dvd dl or 9 media.

I've seen it here in Kansas City at Best Buy and CompUSA for around $200.

Anybody know if purchasers of the avic80DVD navigation system is eligible for the upgrade as well or only AVIC-N1 purchasers. Bought my unit about 2 months ago and it came with version 1.0. I registered the product nonetheless and hoping for the best

Thanks for all your help. I just went to a computer show and saw the sony for 175. but nobody has the dvds yet.

The avic does play dvd+r

I called pioneer and am getting the update cd for free, I asked them how much the dvd would be and they told me $15 for a replacement cd. I was getting scared by the 350 pricetag i saw for the others and i even asked my installer how much the cd was and he told me about 250. I guess thats how much it is if you dont have a serial # for a product.

I think the $250 disk is an upgrade (something that adds new features, data, ect.) for an older model Nav system.  The free disk is an update (bug fixes).  There is a new disk coming out for the AVIC-80 that will upgrade it with the same map data and 12 million POI that the AVIC-N1 has.  I imagine that one will cost $$.

So I think if you just need a replacement disk (exact copy of a disk you already have) it is much cheaper.

Oh yeah, that's great that it will play DVD+R.  Just need to find blank DL DVD's now.
