I am going to install the AVIC-N1 into my 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid. I have the install figured out except for one thing: Where/how to install the GPS antenna.

Really what I'm concerned with is routing the wire for it so that it is mostly hidden. I figure that this would probably be easier if I were to mount the antenna inside the car on the dash, but have heard that it will get better reception if mounted outside the car.

How important is mounting the antenna outside as opposed to inside? Does anyone have any tips for routing the wire for it on the inside/outside of the car so that it is inconspicuous?

Thanks

It isn't as important as you think, just put it under the rear deck and be done with it. DONT DRILL ANY HOLE TO THE OUTSIDE OF YOUR CAR OR TRY TO MOUNT IT OUTSIDE!!! First off I doubt the antenna is waterproof, second it only uses the antenna when you first start the unit to find where you are and then it switches to a system called "dead reckoning".

If your vehicle has window tint don't mount it in the rear. The GPS antenna won't receive signals through tint or any type of metal. You can place the antenna under plastic or the carpeted portion of the rear deck. Which ever place you choose to mount the antenna, make sure that it has the clearest view of the sky so that the roof doesn't hide the antenna from the satellites. Use the area closest to the window's lowest edge. Different systems verify their location at different intervals using the GPS antenna.

I have installed the AVIC-N1 GPS antenna vertically on the side pillar, which is between the front doors and the rear ( it is mounted on metal and the car has a roof) under the plastic cover so it is not in view.  Have not had any problems with accuracy, in fact I highly recommend getting the optional voice module.  This is on sweeet unit.  You'll never get lost again..

I would not mount it on the outside.....
