TFT = Thin Film Transistor
LCD = Liquid Crystal Display
Not sure about STN

Look on google.com for help differentiating the types.

The Starvision screens I use are TFT-LCD. The major difference I see with a TFT-LCD as opposed to a LCD is the viewing angle is much wider and brighter.

If you like Quality only buy screens that say TFT.  I could not give you a tech. definition but TFT screens can be viewed from a much wider angle and have a sharper picture and TFT screens have anti-glare covering on the monitor.  I have never seen a single STN monitor that I did not hate.... But that is my opinion!

STN or DSTN = double-layer supertwist nematic LCD.
This is older technology and was referred to on older laptop computers as Dual-scan LCD. A passive-matrix LCD technology that uses two display layers to counteract the color shifting that occurs with conventional supertwist displays. Not a very bright or clear picture, stick with TFT.

TFT = thin film transistor, a type of LCD flat-panel display screen, in which each pixel is controlled by from one to four transistors. The TFT technology provides the best resolution of all the flat-panel techniques, but it is also the most expensive. TFT screens are sometimes called active-matrix LCDs.

TFT or active-matrix screens look a lot better if you've had the chance to compare them side by side.
