i recently aquired an lcd computer monitor for free. i was thinking about hooking it up in my car. anyone know how i could convert the video signal from vga to rca?

converting composite video to vga is not a trvial task. Going from vga to rca is easier. However this home product https://www.cablestogo.com/product.asp?cat_id=2011&sku=40227 will do it you will have to rig up a power converter for it and the lcd though. And in the end it may be cheaper and easier to just use a mobile unit.
