Widescreen DVDs on N1

I have noticed that 16X9 movies do not take up the whole screen on the N1.  The video is completely surrounded by black bars when it could easily use up the whole screen without having to stretch the video beyond its intended aspect ratio.  The only way to get the DVD to take up the whole screen is to go with "JUST" "ZOOM" etc. but then that just degrades the picture quality.  You would think that since you're watching a 16X9 movie on a 16X9 monitor you can just choose "NORMAL" and it would take up the whole screen but that's not the way this system seems to work.  At first I thought I might have a bad unit but I now have a different N1 unit (for a different reason) and it seems to work the same way.  Does this also sound confusing to any of you guys?  I know that a DVD has a resolution of 720X480 and the monitor on the N1 has a resolution of 1440X234 so that may have something to do with it but then it doesn't make sense why 4X3 movies are displayed with only black bars on the side.  On my N1, both Fullscreen and Widescreen videos are displayed with black bars on the sides, about the same width on both ratios, but since there are no top bars displayed on Fullscreen videos there is obviously more viewing area when watching Fullscreen movies.  I have checked to make sure my unit's aspect ratio is set to 16X9 but that doesn't seem to affect anything.  Anybody have any suggestions?

Come on guys.  You either have this problem or you don't.  Has anybody noticed this on their N1/N2 and what is the explanation for this?

I will try it with my N2 today and see if it does the same thing. I will let you know what I find.

Alot of the dvd's you buy today are not actually 16x9 but a more animorphic ratio thats used in the theatres. Because of that a 16x9 monitor may still apear to have black bars on the tops and bottoms and the only way to fix that is to adjust the porportions in the way you mentioned. As for the bars on the side, it sounds like the monitor setting is on 4x3 not on 16x9 which is why you have the bars on the side. Change the setting to 16x9 and it will work fine.

Most widescreen dvd's are 2.35:1 ratio

16x9 is 1.85:1 ratio and your normal square is 1.33:1

No problem, being a movie buff, these are things I learn....btw, all HDTV shows are in 1.85:1 ratio

I cannot get my AVIC-N1 to show 16X9 DVDs on the entire screen while the zoom settings are on "normal".  It will take up the whole screen if I switch to "just" or "zoom" but then the quality goes to crap.  You would think that a widescreen movie would take up the whole screen on a widescreen display but I guess that's not how it works with this one.  I know that's how it works at home.  The aspect ratio is set to 16X9.  I have tried different DVDs with different widescreen aspect ratios on two AVIC-N1s and it's all the same. 

Here's an example of what my widescreen DVDs look like on "NORMAL".

Let me know if it's normal.
