Hi everyone,

I was wondering if any of you have any suggestions on how to extend ribbon wires. I am wanting to install a PS2 in my car. But I only want to mount the CD/DVD drawer in the console. I have already taken apart the PS2 but I need to extend those little ribbon wires in order to do this. Thanks.

Not a good idea because those devices are not designed to send their signals through 20 feet of wire. You will no doubt have electrical interference and static in picture/sound.

It is possible to extend ribbon cables but you will need special crimping/stripping tools and the connectors to go with them - OR you can have some made up by a specialty company. All will be expensive.

Thanks for the reply. I'm only wanting to extend them about 6 inches or so, but I might know someone who can do (he does this kinda stuff for a living). He might be able to help me out. Once again thanks. At least I can ask him now and know that it CAN be done.

If you are good with a soldering ironand have one with a fine tip on it....You could take small gauge wire and go from contact point to contact point on both boards....Just keep the order right on the wiring....Check and double check to make sure that the wires go to the correct coresponding place on both boards...

BE CAREFUL....Dont use a high temp solder iron you could damage the board...

I have done this but not with a PS2....Let me know how it comes out....

i pretty sure PS2s just use an IDE cable from a PC. You can get some of there
here Those are round cables, they are supposted to help are flow inside a PC ... I'm almost positive they are the same thing that the PS2 uses to connect the DVD-ROM to the mother board.

i'm with raven, i've seen it done, it's not a big deal, i wouldn't do much more then 10 or so inches, just to keep the signal flow good,,, just split all the wires from the ribbon with a razor blade or something, solder them, heat shrink them and you'll be fine,

are you putting the cd loader in one place and the remotes in another? i wanted to do something like that at one point, but just never felt like tearing apart a ps2 that much, i did it once to put a chip in it, and it's a pain in the ass with how those cables are assembled in there, haha, good luck, post pics if your doing anything really cool with it

and MC, what the hell kind of conectors are you even talking about? and special crimpers , strippers? this isnt fiber optic lazer cable or something crazy, it's just ribbon cable, 5 or 10 wires that have the plastic on the suround slightly melted together,,, there really isn't anything complicated or expensive about connecting them, don't give people bad advice if you aren't sure what you're talking about

Captanham - if you are talking about the IDE ribbon cable that goes from the computer motherboard to the DVD then you are talking about a 20 pin molex ribbon cable connector. The plug has self piercing pylons, one for each of the 20 wires in the ribbon cable. The crimper is a tool that compresses the top piece of the connector over the bottom piece while piercing the wire and locking the two pieces together. .......................

OH CRAP - Never mind - I just realized you are talking about a Play Station 2 (PS2) not a personal computer. Sorry for the faulty read. You can do as Capt says or try a PC store to see if they have a longer ribbon cable already made up.

sorry mc, i didn't mean to be sh*tty, but even if it was a personal computer, you don't have to take off the ribon cable conectors to extend the wires, you can still cut in the middle, splice, and extend, anyways,,,  you should be able to figure it out lincolnman, hehe
