hi,

do a search for a LM338 voltage regulator, that along with a few resistors and capacitors will do the trick.  You'll need a heat sink for mounting the regulator, something good for at least 30 watts.  should be able to find everything at mouser.com for around 30 dollars.  hope this helps.

would that regular require less power, than having a 12v to house power to 8.5v?

iam asmuing it would, but a big difference if car was to sit? for 10 mins
