I just connected up my AVN5435 and I have poor radio reception. I have a Nissan so I used a diversity antenna adapter. Does anyone know the culprit here? Just as an example I can scan forward and not pick up a single channel.

Make sure there isn't a power antenna lead that needs to be powered up, especially if it is a glass mount antenna. If it is on the AM side, try pulling the antenna out of the Eclipse unit slightly, and it should work fine.
