I've talked to a couple of people, but interested in this board's opinion.  I am mounting and overhead LCD in a 2001 Suburban with sunroof.  Some people have suggested a thin (how thick/thin?) layer of plywood above the headliner to screw into, other suggested using some sort of plastic backer.  Obviously, the headliner by itself would be a poor choice of backings, so what does the board recommend?

I use a thin piece of metal. Strong, light and durable. Alos, doesn't matter how many times you take the screw out of it, it will still have the same bite in the metal but if you take the screw out of a wood piece, you only have about 2 times before the hole is bored out.

Use metal straps, I buy mine from Home Depot.  Hurricane straps that are 36 inches long.  Cut to fit with tin snips.  Very tough and will not strip out.  Sunroof  Burbans are the very easy to install.

Thanks for all the input, got her installed this afternoon.  Used a small metal bracket forward and the factory metal strap that runs along the rear of the sunroof for the rear.  Had to use longer screws than those that came with the LCD, the headliner is pretty thick and I wanted to ensure a good grip in the backing.  No problems clearing the sunroof/moonroof.  A really easy install, all the suburban panels pop off and on with little effort!!!

panels pop on and off with little effort... is that really a good thing in the long run? LOL

Remember when cars were actually put together with screw and bolts and not stupid clips that eventually break and loosen.. and god forbid if you don't have that little clip lined up just right for putting back together...

and has anyone noticed in the new (2001 and up) suburban the pillar panel between the front and rear doors about midway up the stress marks on the panels? you can see just a white square where there is a clip.. Everytime I do a video system for a dealership I have to show it to them so we don't get blamed for it..

BTW, congrats on your install!

You can use a FM modulator, but you may need the diversified ant. adapters.  One for stock to aftermarket and then a aftermarket  back to stock...I'm not sure if they still use the same anteanna plugs or not.

I used an FM modulator and it sounds great.  Make sure you get an inline version.  Don't know about the Nissan, but GM has a non-standard size antenna fitting, so had to buy two adaptors as well.  Much simpler solution than just about anything else if you are keeping the factory HU.
