does anybody know what the difference is between alpines current nav unit and the new one that is supposed to be coming out? (in detial, if you can?). i suspect that once this new one comes out, youll be able to find the current ones on ebay for a dime a dozen and im wondering what i would benefit by spending top dollar on the newest one, or getting the current one for half price on ebay posted_image

thanks in advance!

i mean, im sure the actual software is a little better. and it is more updated. but you can get updates for the previous years nav systtems too (like the cd's with all the new roads on there, and new businesses).

aside from that, im not sure what the difference is.

i heard something about the new one being voice activated. big deal. i could care less about that

Thought last years was voice activated too? I think a big change is the 3d imaging of certain selected large cities... It may help with navigation in real time if you can see a 3d image of the buildings you're near... Other than that I haven't sat down with the books side by side and compared... So dealer cost will be??? posted_image hahaha

Bad news BoominRolla, the NVE-N872A will NOT be compatable with your D-900.It only works with the D-300 and D-310. The main differances between it and the 852 will be better software package and the use of XM's streaming traffic and weather. When will we see it? God only knows. I was promised , without question before the end of Sept. 30 day delay. End of Oct., release date moved to Nov.I will be very surprised if we see it before Xmas. And yes retail is $1700.

great info. one quick question: is the NVE-N852A is the newest nav that we are waiting to be released, correct?

also, is it NOT compatible with the IVA-D901? is that what your saying? or is it just not compatible with the OLD 900 model?

No the NVE-N852A is the one that is being replaced. It is compatable with the D-900 and the D-901. In early 2004 it got a software upgrade, if your looking at a used one make sure it has the upgrade. The new model is the NVE-N872A. It will only be compatable with D-300 and D-301.

do you mean the D-300 and D-310, not the 301, right?

cause im looking into getting the new nav and the 310 head unit.

Typo, D-310. Blame NIFS ( numb installer finger syndrome ) Excellant choice on the screen, of all that we sell I like the D-310 best.

i appreciate all your info tss.

i really like the 310 as well. my buddy has the 901 and the clarity is amazing. obviously due to all the pixels. i cant decide which to get. i am leaning towards the 310 though not only because its cheaper, but because of the touch screen.

i was wondering why you like the 310 better than the 901?  i figured youd have a much better backed opinion than i do. can you tell me what you like most about the 310?

thanks for your help!

I've always liked the D-901, but Alpine has discontinued it and I've long since sold out of them. Here's a couple of points on the D-310. First I'm not a large touch screen fan, I'm constantly needing to clean the screen. Second, a great plus is it has a display so you can use the thing with the screen closed. Recently in So. Cal. law enforcement has started to pull anyone with an open screen over at night. It doesn't matter if you were illegally watching a DVD or not, they say they THOUGHT you were and then procede to check license, reg, insurance, BREATH because they had a reason to pull you over. Not a fun thing if you had a glass of wine with dinner. Also if you get Alpine's 420i I-Pod adaptor the D-310 scrolls thru much faster then the D-300.

oh yea, i was wondering about the 420 ipod thing - my friend has it and says it sucks. says its really slow and you pretty much have to create a ton of playlists to avoid having to do too much scrolling through songs. he says also the onscreen interface is clumsy as well. not easy to navigate like using the actual ipod is. i was wondering if this is true or not (he isnt that smart when it comes to electronics, so i figure youd know better). btw, he has the 901 head unit. (not sure if the 310 is better fitted for the ipod interface than the 901)

also, on alpines website, it says that the 901 has ai-net. however, it doesnt say this about the 310. im guessing the 310 doesnt have ai-net in this case?? does this mean no cd changer for me if i buy the 310?

The third letter in Alpine's model number let's you know whether it is "A" for AI net, "M" for M-bus or "E" for economy, so it is AI net. The D-310 is much better for scrolloing thru songs on the 420i.

that is not the model number of the new nav unit. It is the 872A and I have it! Its great. Im not sure whether it will work with the D900 but I have the IVA-D310 and it works well, has voice command, real time 3d nav, XM traffic and weather, and i bypassed the video lockout with no problems!

FYI

The NVEN872A DOES work with the IVA-D900/901 and the CVA1005 also for that matter, by saying its not compatible you mean no touch screen operation I hope

I have hooked it up to the D901 and also in the manual it lists all connection diagrams for every Alpine screen made.

It has alot of awesome features and works perfect with the D901

Thats a good deal ...

But wanna hear the downside .. ?

The money you saved ... will need it to fix it if it breaks .. since there is no warranty on units bought off Ebay ..

Call Alpine and ask ... there are NO authorized "ebay" sales ..

we dont need to call and ask. thats common knowledge. we all know there is no warranty on ebay purchases. thats the tradeoff  most of us are willing to take to save a few hundred dollars on each piece of equip. i, however, am buying mine from a shop. not for warrany purchases, but because i used to be an installer there and im still good friends with the owner. he still gives me employee discount baby! hehe. i think im picking mine up friday. i cant wait!

One of the things I've noticed that I wish I could change is that you cannot change the color of the maps on this nav. I would like to have the background change to black at night as I have seen on some factory installed units, this one just doesn't do it....

I just picked one up on ebay to replace my old 852.  First off, I chose a seller that has a lot of feedback and who was also offering a 1 year warranty through them.  So what if they're not authorized.  As long as they're willing to repair the item over, I'm happy.

I like that the 872 has a USB and pcmcia slot for future upgrades.  I'm looking forward to what Alpine has to offer.  I too would like the black background for night driving such as is offered in the newer Kenwoods and Pioneers.  Maybe future software upgrade?

As for differences, the 872 has much sharper, better detailed graphics.  The car icon flows smoother.  It has pictures of buildings on downtown maps, arrows on streets that indicate one way.  The touchscreen feature is great.  It can pick up 12 satellites vs 8.  Uses the same wiring as 851/852 (easy plug & play replacement - except you'll have to run the new voice microphone), points of interest are easier to find.  There are some other minor perks...

The only thing that became worse is the sound quality of the voice prompts.  they're ok, but not as clear and realistic as the 85X.  I'm also not sure that I like that the software was created by Microsoft!!  Crashes anyone?  (xbox360, windows....)

As for upgrading from an older gen, I'm indifferent.  You can pick up a used one on ebay for about $700-$800, or the new one for $1500.  If you have an 852 or 851, you could hold onto those for a while longer and just update the software.  By the way I have extra copies of the latest DVDs, PM me if needed.  I heard authorized dealer cost on the 872s is $1060 - so they should drop a bit more over the next few months.

Hope this helps!
