you are looking for green with yellow stripe or green with black stripe. wire should rest at 3-5VAC when parked and go up with speed. All you have to do is drive it about 30 feet and the reading should go up and down as you accelerate and decelerate. connect red wire of your voltmeter to this wire and the black wire to chassis ground.

On the non-turbo models the vss is in pin 12 of the 35 pin plug. On the turbo models the vss is in pin 13 of the 35 pin plug. On the STi models the vss is in pin 26 of the 35 pin plug.
The vss wire is also found behind the instrument cluster.

However, with the D1 you do not NEED to hook up VSS. if you dont, it will get your speed through GPS, but will not know your speed if you are in a tunnel or have no GPS signal for any other reason. smc0922@hotmail.com if you have any other ?'s.

I forgot to add the wire will be found at the ECM which is where the passenger's feet would be, under the mat. its a silver box about 7" square under a protective metal plate. 10mm nuts secure the plate to the car.

I'm installing a Pioneer AVIC N1 right at this second in a 2005 STi - I've researched a fair bit, and I'm 99% that the wire I want to tap into for the speed sensor is the 2nd pin of the right of the 3 connectors that connect to the combination meter (speedo, tach etc.) - C2 of connector i10 according to my wiring diagram - this is for a 2005 STi. Maybe not exactly the same as your installation, but any chance you can confirm this is the correct wire? I can't figure out a way to check before I tap into it, and basically I'm scared of screwing up the speedo! Any info much appreciated. posted_image

I posted this same question on a Subaru board as well.  I'm basing my interpretation of this being the correct wire on the "troubleshooting" steps for problems with the speedo - and it gives the same info that if everything is OK, the reading will go from 0 - 5V depending on speed.

Do you know if this is the same for an 04 STi?  I'll be installing my friend's Eclipse AVN 5435 next weekend.  I just hooked mine up in my RSX Type-S to a wire on the ECM and would like to do the same on his since it's easy access.  Wire color and pin location for the VSS is much appreciated.  If you happen to know where to hook up the reverse wire as well, that would be great.  I didn't hook mine up on my car, so I'm not sure about his either.  Thanks again for any info.

04-06 share the same location for the ecm. that goes for imprezas, wrx's, and STi's.
