Flip Down in Suburban

I have a 99 Suburban I'm going to put a flip-down dvd player in. I want to put it where the dome light is (there is a hump there with a bracket underneath the dome/reading lights). There is also rear A/C controls there that I don't really want to move. There is enough room to sandwich the unit in between the overhead console and the rear A/C controls but I have to deal with putting it on that hump and have to somehow fill the gap in where the roof goes back up. (Worn out yet?) Anyone done one of these in this type of configuration? Would really appreciate any help. Thanks a million.

What kind of dropdown monitor do you have ? Most dropdown systems have a mounting plate that you can slip between the headliner ( it's made of metal ) that has the mounting bolts to attach it to. Find the place that you want have the monitor and slip the metal between the headliner and the roof. Pre drill the holes into the headliner for the bolts to pass through and attach the base plate to the dropdown monitors plastic housing with the supplied bolts. You should be able to attach the monitor to the secured base plate & plastic. Wire in the domelight and you should be good to go.

I got the VS-102 10.2" flip down with DVD. I purchased off of EBAY. It is supposed to arrive tommorrow so I will tell you for sure on the mounting plate then. I would like to install it to the bracket that the dome light attaches to (as it is a sturdy point) but the is only about 2" x 4" bracket. Is that enough? This unit will be installed on that hump where dome light is.

It has arrived and it has the standard flat plate. I have attached the mounting plate to the dome light plate and am pretty much finished. Is there any problem using the dome light wires for power and ground (I'm sure this has been asked many times)? If I can use these then I don't think I will have to drop the headliner to run the wires. This unit has a built in FM modulator/transmittor so I don't have to run anything to the speakers. Thanks.

If the domelight suplies a constant +12 volt and a ground you can. I don't remember if it does or not. I personally would not recommend you to do it that way thoug. You should gound it on the bracket you are mounting it to and run you a ower wire underneath the driver side dash just to the left of the steering column and conect it to the thick (12ga) brown Accessory wire. That will power up the screen with the key in ACC or Run or you can connect it to the RED or RED / WHITE thick (12ga) wire and that is good source of a constant +12V.

I see the thick red wire but I can't find the brown accessory wire. Also, do I have to splice the wires or is there a coupling I can buy? There are empty spaces on the fuse block labled black, gray,etc. Can I plug in to any of these without having to splice the wires? For some reason I just hate splicing wires.

You don't have to splice into the wire just strip a small section about 1/4" wrap the wire around it and solder it in, then tape it up with some super 33 or 88.  Your 99 sub may have an orange wire for accessory instead of brown.

Ok, I found the red 12v wire and the orange accessory wire and tested them with a volt meter and they were the right wires. But when I was down there I found a gray box with empty slots (I think this is the relay box or fuse relays). I stuck the volt meter on some male ends that were not being used and found a 12v and also found one that only delivered 12v with the key turned on/accessory. I hooked the red wire to the 12v and the yellow wire to the other. It works great. My question is do I have any short circuit protection since I wired directly to these empty slots? Am I sucking power from something that I shouldn't be? I'm a little nervous tell I know for sure. Told you I didn't like splicing wires. BTW, If I have to, I can strip and solder to the wires as xtremej described.
