I would like to wire up my rear view camera so it automatically comes on when the car is in reverse or when I flip a switch.

For most of the time, I would just like to for it to come on when I put the car in Reverse. But when I tow, I would like for it to be on all the time, and I would like to just have to flip a switch.

I was thinking of using a relay and use the reverse lights to get it to turn on when I am in reverse, but don't know how to wire it so that a switch can override that and turn it on all the time, without effecting the reverse lights.

Any ideas on how to wire it so that the reverse camera will only come on when in Reverse, or will always be on if I flip a switch?

Thanks.

what are you using for a screen?

most indash units with camera in also have a way to view the rear camera without a switch or reverse.

My head unit (AVIC N3) will be able to switch for me.  I just don't want the camera powered on all the time.  Only when I use it.

Use a relay to switch the camera power.  Trigger off the reverse lights if you don't have access to the reverse trigger at the HU.

I just hooked up a camera to my Kenwood kvt815. it has a 12v signal comming from the reverse light to active the monitor. I put a switch on the dash that does the same thing. I used diodes to keep the Reverse light from comming on when I flip the swithch. No relays needed.
