I was wanting to hardwire my tomtom one into a 04 focus... the only problem that i have is that there are 3 wires. a red, black and a white. red is pos the black is my ground. I'm pretty sure that the white is also positive but im not sure. can anyone help? I tried wiring it up with red positive and white and black as ground but it didn't do anything. I don't want to try it the other way and mess up my tomtom.

did you have to cut a cigarette lighter plug off of the adapter?

f you did, get a multimeter and test for continuity between the tip of that plug and the wires on the other end.   whichever wires show continuity with the tip are your positive wires.

are you sure that the cigarette lighter adapter didnt have a voltage converter built in, alot of these adapters will take 12 volts as an input, but only put out 5 volts or so.  if you cut that off, and wire 12 volts directly to the gps unit, you could fry it.  be sure to check before you finish wiring the unit.  just plug the adapter into an outlet and measure the voltage coming out of it.
