WHY do we need a VSS wire? I mean, I can buy a $250 portable nav unit and it can tell me my speed, elevation and direction. Accurate to within in 1 or 2 mph. But the $1500 nav units need this and can't work without it. Now add Can-bus to the mix and now lets start adding up all the wasted time researching info and testing. Couldn't the Pioneer's and JVC's of the world at least give the option to operate it either way. Or provide lists of can-bus interfaces.Or make it so it installs itself so I can sit back with my feet up. Just venting because it is cheaper than    taking it out on the car. posted_image

Well as far as the Pioneer goes you can get away without hooking up the VSS wire. The only downsize is the the unit won't be as accurate, But the GPS sats will track the location of the car. The other features of the Pioneer unit won't work, since it depend on the VSS wire to gather info. ( VSD is the feature on the pioneer unit) Also I rather have the Pioneer units over any cheap looking portable navposted_image

Is up to the installer to test all wires with a DMM whenever possible.
