Hi, I recently purchased a Sony xvm-h6 headrest monitor, which I am NOT planning to install in a car. I would like to run it off a 12-volt lantern battery or other battery, and I'm trying to figure out how to run the power cables. I hope someone can help me.
The unit comes with 3 power wires -- red with a 1 amp fuse which is supposed to be connected to the ignition; yellow with a 5 amp fuse which is supposed to connect to the car battery, and a black ground cable, to be connected to the car chassis.
Can anyone suggest how I might wire this to a 12-volt battery NOT in a car? Do I need to install some kind of a switch in the ignition cable?
Thanks in advance for your help. Bryony

There are two way's the you could wire this up. The first would be to wire the Red and Yellow together and go to the positive terminal with the Black wire going to the ground terminal. Another way would be to wire the Yellow wire to the positive terminal, wire the Red wire to a switch and the other side of the switch to the positive terminal, again, the Black wire to ground. Be sure that the battery rating is large enough to run the monitor for the length of time that you want. Good luck, Tom

Follow the recommendations above. The yellow wire is used for memory to keep the settings at what you set them at last, just like a car stereo. If you disconnect the yellow wire from power it wil reset the monitor to factory defaults, and you may have to make adjustments the next time you turn it on. Usually not a big deal with monitors. Thanks, Tom and Don.
Good to know about the monitor resetting to defaults.
Is there any down side to not using a switch in the red ignition cable?

The down side that could occur is when the unit is turned off, it still has a drain on the battery. I do not know if your monitor does this or not. You can tell by hooking up a current meter between the Red wire and the Battery (also have the Yellow wire and Black wire hooked up to the battery) and see if there is any current draw with the unit turned off. I hope it works for you, Tom

It works! I will check to see if there's power drain, but, hooray!
Thanks again.
