Hey. I currently have a 2002 Toyota Rav4 and am looking to install a Viper 5900 alarm and remote start on it. the item is about $240 by itself, but $600+ installed, so I was thinking of installing it myself. Can anyone point me in the right direction of where I may find an installation guide? thanks also, it was recommended that I get a Piezo siren, proximity sensor, and dual zone shock. i want to protect my car in anyway possible because there has been a couple hit-and-runs on my bumper, fender, and doors in the past. any other suggestions? thanks a lot!

this is the wiring chart you need. https://www.the12volt.com/installbay/forum_posts.asp~TID~4870 now u need a transponder bypass. KEY-OVERRIDE-ALL or Bypasskits XK05 flashed with PKT2 v. 2.00.

thanks. i've looked into the transponder bypass and it seems by 2002 doesn't have the "chip" within the key, so i think i'm safe to do without one.

What is a test light? as you've probably figured out, I am not car electronically savy. is there like an installation video or installation guide with step-by-step pictures? i am have no idea as far as wiring goes, but am very good at following visual instructions. thanks for all the input!

It is very unlikely that a 2002 Rav 4 has a transponder key. I don't recall ever seeing one that did. DEI's tech sheet always listed it as a possibility, but I never saw one. Maybe it only came on the very top model.
matrixlu21, it is recommended that you use a digital multimeter to find all the wires. You are not going to find any step by step videos on how to install it on your particular vehicle. Go to the "Download" section here (up top) and search for a manual before buying it. If you can not comprehend it, go to a shop and have one professionally installed.

For you to ask what's a test light? Tells me that you would be better off spending the extra money! On a practical level strip the steering column cowl and lok for an antenna ring in the form of coper wire in plastic with 2 thin wires coming from it surrounding the ignition switch. Don't try and strip the key, if it has remote controls on it you won't find the chip. Another method would be to leave the key in the ignition switch and attempt to hot wire the vehicle. Once you've done that remove key from vehicle, wait for 5 mins and then try again. If it won't start you have a chipped key.

howie does have a point. If you are unsure how to tackle this or havent used a DMM digital multi meter or seen a test light, then your are heading for some trouble. Check your dash light to see if you got a key or security symbol. if you do then the key is chipped or you can do howie's method (hot wire). as the post mentioned the the antenna ring, when opening the steering column, look atound your ignition barrel. there will be a black ring or antennaa like with 4 wires comming out of it. if you see that your car has an immobilizer.

thanks for all the input. i'll have to look around for an installer. one of the most important things for me is to get the 504D Stinger Shock Sensor so that I'll know when someone trys to do a hit-and-run on my car while it's parked. To have full vehicle coverage, including the front bumper, fenders, and back bumper, would I have to have shock sensors for all those parts or will ONE shock sensor cover the entire vehicle? thanks

sorry. i'm such a newbie. still learning! i would like to include the following items to the Viper 5900 system: 2 DEI 514N sirens, 2 DEI 513T MINI PIEZO SIREN, 1 508D Field Disturbance (Radar) Sensor, 1 DEI 504D Stinger shock sensor, 1 506T Glass Break Sensor. A) am I missing any sensors above? B) would the viper 5900 system be able to accomodate all the additions? C) would i have to purchase anything extra for the system to be able to accomodate all the additions? D) would 1 shock sensor and 1 glass sensor be enough to protect the whole vehicle or would I have to purchase multiples of each sensor for it to cover the whole car? (helps with hit-and-runs in parking lots) E) is a tilt sensor recommended ontop of all the above? if so, which one should i get: 500T, 507T, 507M? THANKS!

a) damn you have alot of sensors your not missing any unless you want a proximity sesnsor (it watches ppl that walk to your car it gives warings)
b) the viper will be able to accomodate 1 siren, but using a relay for additional sirens should be no problem. THe piezo sirens go inside the car. also the viper should have 4 zones, you might have to double up on a zone since you have so many sensors.
c) you will need to purchase a relay for the siren and crap load of 1N400X series diodes. they are simply 1 amp diodes used to isolate each sensor. d) 1 shock sensor is usually sufficiant. they can be adjusted for sensitivity. A glass sensor wont do much unless the glass it broken on impact. e) if you want a tilt sensor, its good to have if you dont want your car being towed, got some nice rims or your car is worth ALOT then go with what you need, 500T - verticle motion and motion sensor 507T- electronic Tilt/motion sensor 507M - digital tilt sensor i guess the 507m is the newest most imprived that DEI has to offer.

please elaborate on what you mean by "zones" in item B. thanks
Posted By: tedmond
Date Posted: March 10, 2008 at 11:33 AM
well on your remote it will accept 4 zones. each zone watches a part on your car. example Zone 1 - Hood Pin Zone 2 - Shock Sensor Zone 3 - Door Trigger Zone 4 - Optional trigger (usaully trunk or hatch)
since you only have four zones, when u have more than 2 optional sensors you will use the same zone twice (double up). heres a scenario. Some one opened your door so zone 3 was set off, but you have the glassbreak sensor on the same zone, so if some1 was to break the window, it would show on your control as the door opening. hope i didnt confuse you in anyway.

that definitly clears it up. thanks mate! one more thing though. zone 1... does that detect whether the hood is open? is that what the hood pin means?

thought you were heading to an installer. Remember you have alot of upgraded addons for your alarm. A wrong hookup and you fry all the sensors, Damage sirens(rare but can happen) and even fry your cars electricl system. To your question; you will get normal automotive relays 30/40 amps SPDT relays.

yea. i am going to head to an installer but i've read somewhere that some installers over charge for relays that they get for $4ish, so I want to go prepared with materials just to make sure.

smart choice that your bringint it to a pro shop. Im not saying you cant do it alone, its just the question about the "testlight" gave me a sense that your heading for some knee deep shoveling. I; myself if someone brought parts to me i wouldnt install it cuz if something went wrong then it would be my fault. If it was ur supplies and sumthing goes wrong i wouldnt really warrenty it. But yea ask ahead and see if the installer will install parts you buy. Relays for 2 bucks if wholesale and for your car; 5 relays in sufficiant. as for diodes a pack of 100 is 15, they will run you 10 cents or less per diode.

hey! so i've got everything except the relays. I was looking through ebay and there were different types of the 30/40 amps SPDT relays. could you link me to an auction page that is selling the appropriate kinds that I'll need? honestly, i wouldn't be able to do install the alarm alone, let alone choose the needed instruments for it, that's why i'm on this forum getting help. haha. it's all good. i spoke to the installer and they said the diodes were included in the installation price but the relays were seperate at $10 each. thought i'd get a small bulk off ebay for less. i'd appreciate it if you could point me to a good listing on ebay because i've checked and they are all different. thanks mate! i appreciate all your help.

ebay links dont work in the forum, but you can c/p into your browser. https://..ca/10-PACK-30-40-AMP-RELAY-HARNESS-SPDT-12V-BOSCH-STYLE_W0QQitemZ220215507824QQihZ012QQcategoryZ6779QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742.m153.l1262 the link is for 10 relays with 10 harnesses. are you sure that the shop will install the parts you buy?

they said they'd use the one's i brought, otherwise, it would be $10 for each relay they have to provide. thanks

not trying to be confusing or irratating with my questions, but i was just looking through the directedstore.com and they have the: 610T relay and 8617 relay. what is the difference with those and the SPDT 12V from ebay? sorry. thought i'd check all my options with DEI before getting off brand ones. . thanks

Hey Oscar16. You need to start a new thread. (create a new topic) And also, if you can, get some help with your composing of the "question" It's VERY hard to read and understand. Where are you located? USA? Somewhere else? -------------
