Door Locks, 03 Focus

Hi. I am not new to automotive in general but new to remote starts and new to this forum. Last winter I put a remote start in my '93 Ranger with the 5 wire door locks (using relays of course) and it has never failed so I must have done something right. This year I want to put a remote start in my '03 Focus. My question concerns the door locks. I understand they are negative trigger. For this vehicle (and for negative trigger lock vehicles in general) is it ok to directly wire to the remote start's negative lock/unlock outputs to the corresponding vehicle wires without relays? I just don't want to burn anything out in the module. Also, what bypass would be recommended? Thank you...

Direct wiring negative triggers for door lock is fine as you are only operating a relay load. If you were wiring to the motors you would need to use relays as you did before. If you want to do driver priority unlock ie progressive unlocking, you would need to use a relay to the driver door lock motor using the unlock wire from the alarm/remote start. Then use the second unlock wire from the alarm/remote start to the negative unlock in vehicle to unlock remaining doors.

Ok, I thought about it and now I'm curious. This vehicle already has priority door locks (and domelight supervision) from factory. How would I hook up a remote start to keep the priority locks function? If I tap into the wires in the kick panel it seems all locks would work together. Are there lock/unlock wires in a lock module or GEM module I would tap into instead? Or is it something completely different? I guess part of the problem is, I'm familiar with power locks but not the priority locks. I'm thinking it's just the module that does the function when it receives a second pulse within a certain time frame. That's why I was thinking maybe I connect to module wiring. Ok, sorry for the long post. Appreciate any help. Btw, any preferences to which bypass module to use? I was thinking PKALL or DBALL? Thanks...

I did read that article first. It left me a little more confused. Is the GEM module going to give me a problem? If I wire the remote start to the lock/unlock wires by the driver's kick panel I'm assuming the locks will work no problem, unaffected by the GEM, simultaneously. But to keep the progressive locks I thought maybe I could tie into the GEM lock/unlock wires. But if the GEM goes to sleep it sounds like it may be more trouble. It doesn't seem to go to sleep when using my factory fob. Maybe I've just been pressing the button twice. I haven't yet committed to doing this install. Just trying to get all my ducks in a row first. I felt good about installing the remote start in my Ranger myself. And I don't need any kids working in any big box store to hack up my wires, learning. Thanks for any help.

No, I hadn't seen that. I'll check it out. I've come to realize that the remote start system should or has to be priority lock capable in the first place. Thanks for the information/link.

Yes it does, DEI brand units will have a second unlock for progressive (Driver priority) unlocking. And its not vehicle dependent. Wiring to door lock motors can put progressive unlock on any vehicle even if it wasn't factory equipped to do so.
