I hooked up a new remote starter in my '02 Cavalier 5spd.Everything seams OK (locks, trunk, flashing)but I CAN'T get a tach signal.Or atleast I can't get it to learn the tach. What am I doing wrong?I have never had a problem like this before...I also tried a different starter (2 different startes-same car-same problem). Is there somewhere else to be hooking this tach wire up to other than the "purple w/white stripe"?

Have you tested the wire to see what the AC voltage is at idle? Have you tried Multi Speed Tach? Are the parking lights flashing 5 times for a failed start attempt?

Is it trying to start at all?

I tried both tach learn meathods. The voltage at the wire i believe was ~6v a/c(I don't remember the exact #)I have not even tried to start it yet...but if I can't llearn the tach it is not much good to me.I'm sure it will start fine w/o it when its warm but winter gets as cold as -46 here so it will need the tach so it doesn't under-crank.

Please give us the locations of the tach wires that you have used. If all else fails you can use the injector wire at the injector harnesses, use the uncommon colored wire.

If you are using the WHITE wire @ the PCM ....it is a 2 Cylinder Signal........

The clutch wire is PURPLE (+) . There will be a yellow wire there as well and is located at the base of the clutch pedal along side the fire wall. As faras the wiring diagram you can go here: https://www.the12volt.com/info/diagrams.asp for the information.

Yeah you can try to use white like mo12v said or orange at the ignition control module.

The wire I was using (according to the diagram) is the purple w/white stripe located in the engine harness.(Up under the lower rad hose, over the valve cover by the coils)

You need to move the tach until you find a usable one. Don't just attach to the wire because we give you a color. Test it for the proper function and if it works then connect to it.

On the manual remote starters....The door switch can get it outa' ready mode, and shut the car down etc if the door is open. Can this be bypassed?I know it is a "safety" feature, but it is a stupid one! Some of us do forget things in our cars and I don't want to have to go through the whole "ready" procedure every time I forget my smokes in the car.

...And what is so unsafe about opening the door in the first place?

While in ready mode....to open the door, just remote start the car.....you don't need to get back in and do the whole safty "set-up thing" again.

At least thats the way my astro works......

Why the doors are monitered is, open the door, put the rig in gear, hit remote start and of it goes. If the door has been opened....no starty

Is there any magic I should know about with an '02 Cavalier 5spd install?I have the starter wired I just need to bypass the clutch and hook up the tach wire (White,PURPLE / black,or injector wire?)Does a Cavalier have a 2 wire clutch switch or 4 (I don't know what to look for)? And how do I hook it up?

Everyones advice has been awsome...I have my Extreme r/s installed now,and it even works.

The only prob is it over-cranks.I tried reprograming the tach 5or6 times.it still overcranks.I tried normal tach learning and automatic tach learning. It learns the tach both ways but still it overcranks.

I have the tach wire conected to the white wire (goes to the coil) in the engine harness. This seemed to be the only wire that it would pick up the tach sig with. The only thing I noticed is that when it starts, the gauges don't come on and I am wondering if this could be a problem.I double checked the wiring and my ign. wire is correct so....

This is a '02 Cavalier 2.2ltr 5spd.(soon to be at the bottom of the river with this r/s)
