Hi guys,

First post in the forum. Im installing the AVIC-D1 in my 03 Aviator. Can someone please give me the info for the location and color of the wire?

Found it myself....When you disconnect your factory unit there are 3 plugs. One of the smaller plugs (has 3 rows of pins) only has 3 wires going into it (Grey/Black, Blue and one other color). Choose the grey/black wire (its the one in the middle of the 3 rows) and that is your VSS wire.

I didn't find that from any manual, but just by reading different other ford model vss's posts. So obviously use the info at your own risk. I have verified for myself that the wire I found works because I have an Pioneer AVIC-D1 and it accurately detailed my speed information once the wire was plugged in.

Sorry forgot to mention. The plugs are found when unplugging your factory head unit. I had a stock 6 disc cd changer in my Aviator.

Hello all. I can now personaly confirm the above post. I have been searching for the past 4 days on the same info, I installed the AVIC-N2 in my 2002 explorer and was reviewing my Haynes manual with no luck looking for the VSS, vehicle speed sensor. this post made me look again under the radio schematics and voila, just as the other mentioned, I scanned the page and stored it to file. Only on my 2002 explorer there is only 2 wires, one for vehicle speed and other for air bag. The speed wire will be grey with black stripe. The info will be mostly the same for explorer-aviator models and all between. Ford changes plug types on some stuff like speakers but keep the wire coding for quite a few years.

Not that good a view but will give you a good example point, Hynes manual chapter 12 section 12-40. in the schematics, the plug with only 2 wires is the one to look at, tap the grey wire with black strip. DO NOT play with the yellow wire, it is labled as Air Bag Contact.
