OK, i searched. And found only things that i already double checked myself.

I'm installing a remote start in a friends truck. I used to do them for a long while, but have gotten out of doing it. (don't listen to the signiture, i sold my shop about a year ago)

It's a 1998 Chevy fullsize Truck. I have done plenty of these before. I know about the second ignition wire that will set off SES lights. That was hooked up.

Well every listing that i can find for the truck, says that 98+ uses passkeyII. But this truck does not. It has a key that is copied, and is just a regular stamped metal key, no resistor. It does not have the wire loom for the passkey wires.

But with the remote start installed, it starts up, runs and dies. Just like it was an antitheft issue.

The trick to test it out is usually to put the key in the ignition and see if it starts, right? Well i did that, and it still wont start with the remote start.

BUT! If i wait untill the remote start cranks, and then flip the key to the "on" position. It will start and stay running.

Now passkeyII does not need the key to be turned forward to read. And even if it did, how would this key make a difference if it doesn't have the resistor? I searched for 2 hours looking for a hidden loom, or something that may have been done to this vehicle to bypass the passkey. But i can find nothing.

I really need some help, because so far this guy just has an expensive keyless entry unit.

ps.. I have checked with a test light that the acc and ign wires are installed correctly. I checked to make sure i didn't switch them. And that the connections are good. I'm 100% sure that the ignition wires are "hot" the whole time the remote start is cranking and even afterwards. And i did use a tach setup, which seems to be working properly. It will crank for varied amounts of time, untill the motor rev's up right before it dies.

first off... for someone who owned a shop, you would know it is passLOCK 2. 2nd you would know that when it comes to passlock 2, u cant just put the key in the ignition to test if it is working like a transponder bypass. That car certainly does have passlock 2 and i suggest picking up the bypass

The truck will have Passlock II. You can either install a module that interfaces with the Class II data bus like a GMBP or use one that ties into the Passlock wires (Orange/black and Yellow) and duplicates the resistance across them.

Absolutely, there is no chip in the key for P2 and leaving it in the igntion won't work. Get a bypass...

the anti-theft passlock system in the newer GMs does not have a chip or resistor in the key, it is in the ign cylinder itself. So you will not see the chip on the key itself. You can also go to any hardware store and copy a key and it will work. And like evryone else said ALL 1998 gm trucks have passlock II

I'm thinkin passkey, the older ones with the chip. It has no chip and no loom. So i guess it does have the bypass, and that's why it's acting like a security feature.

Sorry, it's been a while, and usually the older vehicles are the passkey and not passlock. But i was also thrown off by this kid saying he had a stamped key (no rubber, no plastic, just a metal hardware store key) and he swears that it works in his truck. Although when i was working on it, i never saw it.

I also had my notes down, marked page **3.. well i turned to the wrong page and saw my passkey relay / resister diagram, and lost myself further..

Thanks for the help, guess i'll get the modual and get things going

Ummm, passkey is newer than passlock. passlock is the most common GM antitheft. Maybe you are talking about vats? Either way, you should have known with the background you listed.
