In my '94 Chev van, I've always gotten annoing distortion at higher volumes with any kind of bass.  I thought the speakers had been blown before I got the thing, but I just put in two new ones (Pioneer TS-G1347 5.25" coax 2-ways) and it's even worse!  They're supposed to handle 120Watts, I'm sure my stock GM radio doesn't overrun that.  What should I do?

Distortion is usually caused by inadequate amplifier power, not by too much power.  Your stock head unit likely puts out very little power and thus it easily distorts at higher volumes.  Excessive distortion can eventually lead to speaker failure.  Really the only way to remedy this is to replace the stock radio with an aftermarket one.

Or better yet, get an amp if you want good clean power. Or you could always just get a Nak-CD700Help with Distortion - Last Post -- posted image.
