I made a thread a couple years ago about adding keyless entry to my 2001 Ford Ranger xlt Auto.
https://www.the12volt.com/installbay/forum_posts.asp?tid=139706
At that time I only had one functional key so I thought I might like remote start but never pursued it because I didn't have the right amount of keys for programming.
Fast forward today and I now have 3 fully functional keys thanks to FORScan.
My question is can I add an Avital 4103LX to my Ford Ranger that already has a Avital 2101 keyless entry? I would really prefer NOT to have two key fobs and both fobs look identical. I am currently not using the spare in/output on the keyless entry and in the thread above it's noted that I could use that to possibly trigger the remote start but I am not sure how that would work. Just looking for clarity on it.
I do know I will need a PATS bypass box. Are there recommendations on which is a good one to use?
So far it looks like the avitail remote start is cheap at around $40. Not sure what else is needed other than the bypass. I would be doing all work myself and from reading how-tos it doesn't seem any worse than when I did the keyless entry. Perhaps a tad easier since I already have some of those wires tapped.
If this is not possible then I'll put it to bed once and for all but if it is and doesn't involve some crazy installation I think I am going to move forward on it since it would be nice to have remote start when it's cold out.
Thanks much,
-Nigel

Try looking for a stand alone remote start, no remotes or antenna then trigger it via the 2011, DEI used to make them.
Either that or use the 4103 and lose the 2011 or upgrade the 4103 (1 button remote) to one with a 5 button remote.

Thank you!
I think I am getting closer.
https://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_30009_Avital-4003-4003L.html
DEI Avital 4003 "Add-on" Remote Starter Module is what I found and was recommended. Seems like a straight forward install... However. I do want to ask a few questions only because I already read the 4003's installation manual online and wanted to ask. In the manual it states:
Primary harness (H1) wiring diagram
H1/1 LIGHT GREEN/
BLACK
(-) FACTORY ALARM DISARM
H1/2 GREEN/WHITE (-) FACTORY ALARM REARM
H1/3 YELLOW (+) IGNITION OUT (TO ALARM)
H1/4 WHITE/BLUE (+/-) ACTIVATION INPUT
H1/5 ORANGE (-) GROUND WHEN LOCKED*
H1/6 BROWN (-) HORN OUTPUT*
H1/7 RED/WHITE (-) TRUNK RELEASE OUTPUT*
H1/8 BLACK GROUND
H1/9 WHITE (+/-) LIGHT FLASH
* Available only when adding a receiver (P/N 543H) and remote
(P/N 474L).
I've highlighted the wires in bold. Since I have a truck I don't have a trunk release. I DO have the same remotes that came with the avitial 2101 keyless entry so I should be able to program those with this unit, but another question I have is the Horn and light flash. My avital 2101 already does this. Do I hook these wires up as well or do I not hook them up since my keyless entry that I did is utilizing them?
IE: My Avital 2101 uses the horn and parking light flash wires. If I hook this Avital 4003 add on remote start module to the system and hook those wires up to it what exactly happens? I can't seem to find any information on the net regarding anything about having both these systems in place. Just want to make sure it's done correctly.
Then the last question I have is what is the recommend PATS bypass module used for a 2001 Ford Ranger. I keep reading all sorts of things. Some say put a key in a box, other say just get a specific add on module that you program with your PATS keys. I will note that I have 3 fully functioning keys. Two main keys and one spare key I just programmed about a week or so ago. All turn over the truck and function as such.
Is there any downfall to removing wires that are not used in the harness? IE: In the Primary harness numbers above there is a Factory Alarm Disarm/Rearm. I do not have a factory alarm so is it safe to say I can remove those wires from the harness to remove clutter?
Thank you for your help. This forum is great and has a wealth of information. I was successful in adding keyless entry to my truck about two years ago from your help and enjoy doing things like this. Everyone around me who does things like this via "shops or brick and mortar stores" tend to take short cuts and have very shoddy work. IE: My wife's car. I don't mind taking a weekend to install it as long as I ask the questions before and then just dissect and understand everything.
Much appreciated for any help :-)

H1/5 Ignore.
H1/6 Ignore.
H1/9 Connect to existing if you want lights on during remote start.
I'd use a 556UW from DEI the Ford specifics don't work too well.

I don't think a 96 Ranger has PATS. No bypasses needed.

Dave,
Thank you!! Helps so much!
I am using the dome light supervision on the Avital 2101 which is the following wires:
*EDIT* Just to clarify. I am using the dome light supervision in terms of when I unlock the car with the fob, the dome light comes on. According to the Avital 2101 manual: Ignition-controlled domelight ON is by default. I shut this off as I didn't want that. So the light only comes on with the key fob and not when I turn off the ignition. *EDIT*
H1/3: LACK/WHITE OUTPUT OF DOMELIGHT SUPERVISION RELAY #30
H1/4: BLACK/WHITE-1 INPUT OF DOMELIGHT SUPERVISION RELAY #87
The yellow wire you speak of that is yellow on the Avital 2101 is:
H1/15: YELLOW (+) SWITCHED IGNITION INPUT (ACCESSORY)
So just so that I have this right, you want me to disconnect the Avital switched ignition input wire (yellow) and connect it to the harness of the Avital RS 4003: H1/3 YELLOW (+) IGNITION OUT (TO ALARM). I would then attach the H1/3 YELLOW + Ignition OUT that was already tapped for the Avitial 2101 keyless entry and attach it to the Avital 4003 RS?
*Just want to make sure I understand, or I am not missing something simple here.*
I have a 2001 Ranger though so I do have PATS. I have read that I should be using the DEI Directed 555P Ford PATS Transponder Interface Module.
*EDIT2*
Now I am more confused about the PATS bypass. I do not want to have a box/store the key in the vehicle that seems silly.
I found the following ones from DirectTechs
DB3
DBALL2
556UW
PKALL
XK05 (Express kit?)
For some reason the Express kit seems like that was used on the ford ranger forum I am at. Would that be better to go with than the ones above?
Ford Ranger Remote Start How To:
Amazon Xpress kit:
Ford Ranger Forum Remote start
*EDIT 3*
I ordered the Xpress kit. Figured this would be easier/better since there is no key left in the vehicle plus has the d2 plug which is good and the remote starter has that as well. Should make it cleaner/easier install.
Thanks much,
-Nigel

For some reason I thought this was a 96. Sorry. So it does have PATS. I have NO, NONE, NADA, experience with bypasses, Xpress Kits, etc. If you need assistance, I hope someone with experience will help, because I'll only be guessing, which won't help either of us. You're doing great. Get the stuff, and start the upgrade.

Appreciate the help. I think that how to on the ranger forum will help with the PATS. Everything else I believe I'm clear on. I wish I would have probably taken this on when I did the keyless entry a year or so back since it probably would have been easier (or maybe overwhelming..lol) since everything was apart but since I've had the truck this long I'm used to taking it all apart honestly. But at that time I only had one working key so I never really thought or put much effort into it because I knew it would have never worked. It wasn't until I used a program called FORScan that I was able to delete all working keys and then program my keys so that PATS would then work. Then after that, I bought a spare key and was able to successfully program the key just with the normal Ford procedure.
I'll update once I get everything.
:-)

Wanted to thank all the help! I tested everything yesterday.

Success!
I wish the menu system was a little easier to navigate on the remote start. I am trying to change from virtual tach to normal tach and I think I got it but there was no confirmation 4 beeps.
Is there a way to verify settings on the unit when browsing through the menus via beeps or confirmation blinks from the led?
Thanks again,
-Nigel
