master switch for audio?

So couldnt you just add a switch in the remote wire so that unless the switch is on the amp and subs hooked up to it wont work?

no because  hu would still work even though no sound would come out and i'm adding some lighting that wont be run off the remote turnon. so i'm just gonna use the switch on the red switched hu line.

OK so i have a son and id like to switch the amps and sub off when he is in the car. that will make just the stock radio playing only. so all i need to do is add a switch in the remote wire to the amp so that when i switch it off then the stock stereo will be on but i wont damage my sons ears with the sub in the back.  is that correct? will it damage anything?

skahide,. if you have just a sub and an amp for sub and running the door speakers off the hu then yeah i think a switch on the remote turn on would work for your situation. does your hu have sub control? u can turn down the sub this way too. do u have more than one amp. r the door speakers amped? if so switching off the remote turn on will kill your audio while having the hu still play no audio

I have a kenwood HU and the middle and front speakers are on the HU.  The 2  15" subs are on the amp. i only have one amp. i havent finished the project yet but i know that if i have the remote wire hooked up when i turn on the HU then the subs work.  but if i unhook the remote wire in the middle of it all going and try to hook it all back again then the amp doesnt turn on until i turn the HU off, then on again. What type of switch can i use? is there anyway to have a lighted switch light when it is OFF? and if not possible, is there a way to add a push button, on-off switch?

for your situation any spst (single pole single throw) switch will work. its basically an on off switch. u can buy them with builtin leds too that light up when they r on.  for your situation.  buy the switch. u should be able to find one at radio shack. figure out where u want the switch, where its gonna be mounted. basically somewhere on your remote turn on cut the wire. u will likely have to add more wire to extend the wiring to the switch.  so now the wire is cut. run one end to one tab of the switch and the other cut end to the other tab of the switch. when the switch is off, the remote power does not get thru cuz the link is broken inside the switch.  when u flip it, the link is made and remote power continues to the amp. if u get one w/ an led i think it'll have a 3rd tab with should be the ground for the led. the middle tab should be a common tab that will give the switch its "on"  and the led power.   if u were to connect power or remote turn on to center tab and ground the led tab and not connect the remote turn on out, i think the led would still light up when u flip the switch but nothing would happen cuz there's no actual out. the circuit isnt being completed.  i'd be careful about disconnecting the remote turnon or any power wire while everything is playing. like disconnecting the battery while the car is running. maybe nothing will happen but i dont think its a recommended thing.
