I have two JL audio 5" 2 way speakers in my front doors. for some reason, the driver's side one was really quiet today and the quality of the sound was poor.. i know because I isolated the speaker by using the fader controls. when i turnd the head unit up almost all the way, it was as if something had "kicked-in" and the speaker began operating normaly. I have not been able to duplicate this problem. any ideas?

I've had something similar to that happen, and it turned out that the wires to the speaker were chafing where they passed from the kick-panel area into the door.  Try isolating the speaker with the balance/fader controls like you did before, then open and close the door several times and see if that gives you the "kicking-in" effect.  Either way, I'd check the wire bundle for chafing, both where it leaves the kickpanel area, and where it enters the door.
