How to find a tachometer wire with your multimeter:

1. Set to ACV or AC voltage (12V or 20V is fine).

2. Attach the (-) probe of the meter to chassis ground.

3. Start and run the vehicle.

4. Probe the wire you suspect of being the tachometer wire with the red probe of the meter.

5. If this is the correct wire the meter will read between 1V and 6V.

Is up to the installer to test all wires with a DMM whenever possible.

Some cars will read a little different than others. You'll know you have it when the voltage increases as you rev up the engine. Then as the rev's come down so should the AC voltage.

Should show 0 volts AV(VAC) whe the car engine is off.

If you cannot find the tach wire specified in the diagram or it's just inconvenient to get to you should be able to teach the unit the TACH from a few other place like fuel injector wires, or near your transmission control module, if you have one.

What type of car as HYMER said?

HONDA, ACCORD, 2001, Tachometer
The tach test connector is located behind the battery on the 4 cylinder, and on a bracket attached to the drivers side strut tower on the 6 cylinder motor. The tach test connector is a white 2 pin connector, and may be covered by a black rubber boot.
Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it.tach wire - Last Post -- posted image.

The test connector most likely will have blue tape on it.
