I just made a custom sub enclosure out of MDF.  I want to cover the entire enclosure and make it all smooth before paiting.  I have seen and heard of people stretching fleece over MDF and then putting on fiberglass resin.  I also heard that your can just apply the fiberglass resin directly to the MDF and then sand and paint.  Which would be the best route for me to take.

Thanks

Dustin

I personally used resin directly on the mdf then sanded it and it worked great for me.

If you are justing wanting to get a smooth finish on the box you don't need to use fleece. Resin will work, just be sure to avoid any runs or drips because they will add extra work when it's time to sand.

How many coats of Resin would you recommend to get a nice smooth paintable surface?

All depends on how thick your coats are. Also depends on how smooth you put the coats down also. When you sand your only going to take a little off, so it does not take much.
