All right guys, I have narrowed down my sub choice to a morel ultimo 12" or a JL 12W7, either of which is going in a sealed enclosure.  I am replacing my dual 10" Phoenix Gold RSDc subs, how much of a step up are these other subs and also which would you guys recommend, the JL or the Morel?  I have 1000 watts RMS (ZPA 0.5), so power isnt a problem, and I listen to new and classic rock, jazz, a little rap, a touch of country, a classical piece here and there,  i pretty much listen to anything that throws off a big stage!  SQ above all else! Opinions?

ALso the reason i am leaning towards JL or Morel is that is what is available from a local dealer...

Wow, you guys are a tough crowd.  I realize BEST is a point of view, I am looking for opinions to filter through and then make my own decision. I am leaning towards the Morel just because I love their Mt-23 tweeters, but really havent decided.  I want my sub to play very detailed, hearing the string being touched on a bass guitar etc etc, yet I need it to be able to smack me in the face when the time comes... once again, opinions?

if you are looking for sound like trying to hear a detailed bass guitar you should focus more on the mid-bass / mid range as those tones aren't usually in the sub bass range. it is the mid range that gives detail to the bass range this is why a bass guitar speaker is designed to play well into the mid range frequencies. dont get me wrong though, the sub has a lot to do with the quality you hear with low frequencies but it is how it blends together with the mid woofer that will determine the results you get.

I never said it was the best...I just said "Morel Ultimo".
I would love to own the Ultimo. So sexy. 5.1" voice coil. Sweet ass looking basket.
